Shell invests in Ottawa’s Iogen

OTTAWA – Shell is increasing its ownership share in Ottawa’s Iogen Energy Corp. and making what the companies described as “a significant investment” that could lead to a full-scale plant to produce cellulosic ethanol for fuel.

Shell is stepping up its share of Iogen to 50 per cent from 26.3 per cent. The oil firm first invested in Iogen in 2002.

Iogen operates a demonstration plant in Ottawa to produce ethanol from plant waste in a process it says uses less energy than conventional ethanol production. The process also does not divert food to the fuel supply, a criticism of existing ethanol plants.
