Inspectors fault preparedness at Shell refinery

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Shell Oil Co. refinery east of Anacortes has come up short in an oil response preparedness inspection.

According to a state Ecology Department news release, the company was ordered Monday to correct a number of deficiencies immediately.

State inspectors say the refinery was not following the equipment readiness program in its legally required oil spill preparedness plan. They also wrote that the refinery lacked maintenance records for response equipment, nor could operators verify the location and condition of some of that gear.

A refinery spokesman, Brian Sibley, says Shell officials are talking with Ecology representatives on what steps to take. He won’t say whether the company accepts or disagrees with the findings.
