Shell Canada Apologizes

Updated Mon. Aug. 18 2008 6:54 AM ET

The oil company confirms an interruption in one of its units at the refinery on Friday afternoon.

It resulted in an increased flare and release of hydrogen and sulphur compounds.

The situation was brought under control quickly, but Shell says those living nearby may have noticed a strong odour.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated.

Also, the company says it’s keeping some of its land in St. Clair Township, which is southeast of Courtright.

This comes despite the oil company’s decision to shelve its multi-billin dollar refinery. By maintaining the land, it gives Shell options about future projects in the area.

There is speculation about a new pipeline in the area, but officials say no such projects are happening at this time.
