WA oil facilities ready for spill response
OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington state inspectors are finding most of the state’s big oil handling facilities are prepared to deal with an oil spill. Inspectors did find serious problems at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery near Anacortes.
Since June 2008, state inspectors have visited 20 refineries, pipeline companies and oil distribution terminals across the state. They’re checking to see that companies are following the state’s new rules requiring a strong preventive maintenance program for their on-site spill response equipment.
The Shell refinery near Anacortes has been ordered to take immediate action to demonstrate its readiness to deal with oil spills.
