DUTCH Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven recently met scientists and engineers at the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre during a visit to Qatar Science and Technology Park.

Qatar Science and Technology Park is a home for technology-based companies from around the world, and an incubator of start-up enterprises. It provides premises, services and support programmes that help organisations to develop and commercialise their technology.

During her visit the Dutch minister met some 20 scientists and engineers at the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre who are researching Gas to Liquids (GTL) and upstream technologies. Shell also runs a learning centre and a youth entrepreneurship programme at the facility. Shell is committed to spending $100mn at Qatar Science and Technology Park over the next 10 years.

Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Science and Technology Park, Imperial College London and Shell have recently launched a joint research collaboration that will focus on further understanding carbonate reservoirs and carbon dioxide storage. Much of the research will be conducted at the Qatar Science and Technology Park.

Shell and Qatar Petroleum are currently building the world’s largest GTL plant at Ras Laffan. Shell’s Gas to Liquids research in Qatar Science and Technology Park is focused on catalyst testing, product development, and GTL by-product research, including water and sulphur management. Shell also has a GTL research programme in Amsterdam.

Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre was officially opened in April by HE the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, and Malcolm Brinded, executive director of Shell Exploration and Production.

Minister van der Hoeven said, “I am impressed by the fact that Qatar is investing in human development and creating a strong research culture. The concept of bringing together world-class companies to conduct research under one roof is certainly interesting, and I am glad to see that Dutch companies like Shell are making a full contribution.”

Andy Brown, Shell’s managing director of Pearl GTL and Qatar Country Chairman said, “It is an honour for us to have minister van der Hoeven visit our facility. Her visit demonstrates the support we receive from the Dutch government to transfer energy technologies from our ongoing Shell research centres in the Netherlands to the Qatar Science and Technology Park for the benefit of Qatar, bringing companies and nations together in the pursuit of real energy solutions for the real world.”
