Masked men armed with chains and iron bars broke into Shell’s gas refinery in the west of Ireland last night, in an escalation of the local protest against the oil company’s €900m ($1.2bn, £800m) project.

Police said about 15 men using bolt cutters gained access to the site, hijacking a company digger truck and causing considerable damage to the facility.

Shell’s investment in County Mayo to process gas from its vast Corrib field off the Atlantic coast is one of the country’s most important infrastructure projects, set to provide up to 60 per cent of Ireland’s future gas needs.
