May 10 (Bloomberg) — Irish police charged seven men after a protest late yesterday against a Royal Dutch Shell Plc gas pipeline in western Ireland.
The men were charged with public order offences, criminal damage and possession of offensive weapons, police said today. Dublin-based broadcaster RTE reported that around 150 people took part in the demonstration at the site where the pipeline comes ashore and that some people tried to pull down fencing.
A notice on the Web site of a group opposed to the pipeline had called for people to take part in a Day of Action on May 9 to help us remove Shells fences from the area. The pipeline was also attacked last month by up to 15 masked men armed with iron bars and chains.
The pipeline is intended to pump gas from the offshore Corrib field, which contains around 1 trillion cubic feet of gas. While Shell agreed in 2006 to reroute the pipeline away from houses in a bid to end opposition, opponents who want the gas processed off the coast have continued to protest, holding rallies and a hunger strike as part of their campaign.
