Eight people who were arrested following yesterday’s protest at the Shell compound in Glengad, Co Mayo were last night charged and released.

Gardaí said over 100 protestors took part in the demonstration and some attempted to gain entry through security fencing.

Earlier this month seven activists were charged over an attempt to pull down a security fence around the site where the planned Corrib gas pipeline will come ashore at Glengad beach, claiming it had no planning permission.

Shell says it has all the necessary consents for the project.
