Shell executive lauds Pearl GTL progress

Shell executive director Malcolm Brinded has expressed happiness over the progress made at the Pearl GTL project at Ras Laffan.

Pearl GTL is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Shell. It will produce cleaner-burning diesel and kerosene, base oils for top-tier lubricants, chemical feedstock naphtha, which is used to make plastics, and normal paraffin, which is used to produce detergents.

Brinded visited the Pearl GTL site yesterday to attend the project’s safety day celebrations.

He said, “Although I have been following the Pearl GTL project closely, I am impressed by the sheer scale of progress on the ground since my last visit. I have chosen to come here on the safety day because Pearl GTL is such an important project for Shell. Delivering this project successfully starts with working safely. We need the commitment of everybody to stay safe.”

Currently, more than 48,000 people work on the Pearl GTL construction site.

Brinded’s visit marks Shell’s Global Safety Day, when all Shell staff around the world down tools to renew their commitment to safety and achieving the goal of zero safety incidents at the workplace.

He has addressed thousands of workers at several stops on his site tour on the importance of embedding safety as a core value in everything they do.

Brinded was joined on site by Andy Brown, Shell executive vice president, Qatar and Abdullah Salatt, chairman of the Pearl GTL Management Committee and senior adviser to the Minister of Energy and Industry.
Salatt said: “QP has followed the progress of Pearl GTL very closely over the last three years, the project is making steady progress and we applaud Shell’s focus on the safety and welfare of all the workers.”

Later in the day, Brinded visited the Pearl Academy in Al Khor and inspected the Safety Day activities staged by the Shell Staff. He also addressed them on the need for enhancing safety in anticipation of commissioning the Pearl Plant.

Brinded is executive director of Upstream International, a new business created from Shell’s exploration & production and gas & power businesses. In the same reorganisation process, Qatar Shell was elevated to the regional division status alongside Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific, underlying the importance of Qatar to Shell’s future success.
