US oil industry split as leaked memo reveals lobbying plan

The following are brief extracts from an article authored by Jim Pickard and Kate Mackenzie, which was published today, 15 August 2009, by the Financial Times.

The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the US oil industry, has written to member companies asking them to “move aggressively” to stage up to 22 public meetings, similar to the recent protests against President Barack Obama’s healthcare plans.

But the plan is exposing splits in the organisation as some members belong to another group, the US Climate Action Partnership, which supports many of Mr Obama’s environmental policies. Shell, a leading member of UCAP, has argued that tackling climate change is “the pro-growth strategy”.

Extracts end

BP America, ConocoPhillips and Royal Dutch Shell Plc via its American subsidiary, Shell Oil Company, are members of both organisations.
