Shell surrenders after PoppyCockup

Shell internal email sent this morning to all employees and contractors in Shell in the UK

Dear Colleagues

Many of you will have seen an article yesterday in the Sunday Times. The headline was “Veterans to boycott Shell after ban on forecourt poppy sales“. The article is very critical of Shell for not allowing collections at Shell’s petrol stations in support of the Poppy Appeal and many of you may be concerned by the comments.

Our policy for some years now has been to have no collection boxes on site. The main reason for the policy was to reduce the risk of robberies that sometimes occur at site and hence minimise on-site risks for staff and customers, as we take HSSE very seriously.

Clearly some of our customers have been upset by this policy. Given the importance of the Poppy Appeal and the strong support that this campaign has from customers in the current environment, we have reviewed the policy and decided to change it. We will support any Retailer or Dealer who is asked or who wishes to have a collection box for the Poppy Appeal at site. We will then review how best to support this campaign at a site level in advance of the Appeal in 2010.

I will also be personally contacting each of the veterans groups to reassure them of our support and to explain the context for our policy decision which didn’t come across in the article.

By way of background we do support the British Legion and the Poppy Appeal. We have collections in our offices. Furthermore we had already arranged with the British Legion to fund and manage the projection of poppies onto the Shell Centre building to help publicise the Poppy Appeal.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Kind Regards
Melanie
