ST. GALLEN, Switzerland -(Dow Jones)- Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RSDA) Chief Executive Peter Voser Friday called for a thorough evaluation of the cause of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, while indicating he is against a White House move to put new offshore drilling on hold.

“I think we need to look into what caused this accident–was it technical in nature, or human error,” Voser said on a sidelines of a business conference in St. Gallen.

BP PLC (BP) has been deemed the responsible party for a massive oil spill that has resulted from a leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil began spewing from the well after a Transocean Ltd. (RIG) rig caught fire April 20 and later sank.
