Royal Dutch Shell supports relief efforts for typhoon Sendong victims

04/01/2012

Royal Dutch Shell plc said today that it is donating US$1 million, in response to the catastrophic typhoon Sendong (international name typhoon Washi). The deadliest cyclone to hit the Philippines in the last 12 years, typhoon Sendong left over a thousand people dead in the provinces of northern Mindanao and billions worth of infrastructure and agriculture in ravages.

The donation from Royal Dutch Shell will be used for rehabilitation efforts in the areas badly hit by typhoon Sendong, as a way of providing long-term assistance for the affected communities.

Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) Country Chairman Edgar Chua said: “The extensive loss of lives and damage to property brought about by typhoon Sendong has again mobilised the local and international community to assist in relief and rehabilitation efforts to enable the victims to rebuild their lives.  I am truly pleased and proud that Royal Dutch Shell has provided a $1 million donation on top of our local fund raising activities which will enable us to provide over Php 50 million assistance to our countrymen.  This donation reflects the seriousness of the catastrophe and the importance of the Philippines to Shell’s operations worldwide.”

Earlier, SciP donated a total of Php 2 million to both ABS-CBN’ Foundation’s “Sagip Kapamilya” and GMA Network’s Kapuso Foundation to help typhoon victims. The Malampaya joint venture partners, composed of Shell Philippines Exploration B.V., Chevron Malampaya LLC, and the Philippine National Oil Company Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC), similarly donated a total of Php 2 million to the same foundations, and another Php 2 million to the Philippine Red Cross’s relief and rehabilitation efforts.

SciP has also partnered with Gawad Kalinga in providing for the immediate needs of the affected families, including provision of relief goods, distilled water and portalets and set up of Shellane cooking stations in different evacuation centres in the affected areas. Over 100 Shell stations in Mindanao continue to serve as drop-off centres for in-kind donations for the typhoon Sendong victims.
