Royal Dutch Shell Shares Down 2.5% After It Reports US Gulf Sheen

The report comes nearly two years after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, unleashing the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) shares traded down more than 2% early Thursday after the company reported a “light sheen” Wednesday in the central portion of the Gulf of Mexico, although the company says it has no ” current indication” that oil is coming from nearby wells.

One analyst, who declined to be named, said the shares were moving lower on the news of the sheen, but declined to comment further.

Late Wednesday, Shell said it has dispatched an oil-spill response vessel to the location, between the Mars and Ursa production areas, and has requested flights to monitor the one-by-10-mile sheen with aerial surveillance. Shell has no indication what the sheen may be comprised of, company spokeswoman Kelly op de Weegh said.

The report comes nearly two years after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, unleashing the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

At 0738 GMT, Shell’s shares were down 2.5%, or 55 pence, at 2,130 pence, leading FTSE 100-listed decliners, while the broader FTSE 100 index was down around 0.3%.
