Shell is undertaking a huge bring your own device (BYOD) project which will see it supporting around 135,000 devices picked by users rather than dictated by the IT department.
At the CA World show in Las Vegas on Monday, Ken Mann, enterprise information security architect at the oil and gas firm, outlined Shell’s shift to become a cloud-first and BYOD outfit.
Shell had already undertaken a project to centralise all its IT, and has outsourced its infrastructure to three main suppliers – AT&T, EDS – since purchased by HP –and T-Systems. Two years ago, the firm adopted a cloud-first policy, which means that any new applications have to be in the cloud unless there is a business case for them to be on-premise.

On the evening of Monday 22nd April, a group of about 10 singers and musicians called ‘Shell Out Sounds’ (SOS) returned to the Southbank Centre to give another musical intervention, during the interval of a Shell-sponsored performance by Imogen Cooper and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. [1] The ‘flashmob’ ensemble premiered a new piece called ‘The Riddle of the Niger Delta’, written specifically for the concert, setting the poignant words of the Nigerian environmental and human rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa. [2] The group handed out flyers about Shell’s human rights record to audience members, many of whom stopped to listen and applauded at the end of the song. The Southbank Centre duty visitor manager said the performers were welcome to come back and perform whenever they liked, and were invited to discuss the issue of Shell sponsorship with the Southbank Centre PR team.

(Reuters) – Britain has blocked efforts by oil major Royal Dutch Shell to settle a $2.3 billion debt it owes Iran by paying in kind with grains or pharmaceuticals, industry sources said.
Shell has been trying for months to find a way to work around international sanctions that prevent it paying in currency for crude it bought from the National Iranian Oil Company before a European Union embargo on Iran that started last July.
The US Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit against the Royal Dutch Shell Petroleum Company brought by alleged human rights victims. The ruling, which was handed down last Wednesday, is seen as a serious setback for the Ogoni community in the Niger Delta, who alleged gross human rights abuses during the mid-1990s by the military government in power at the time.

In addition, the decision essentially cuts off the US courts system from those attempting to redress wrongs allegedly committed by multinational companies, particularly in developing countries.

The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision last week to dismiss a lawsuit alleging human rights violations by Royal Dutch Shell in Nigeria is already being portrayed as a victory for big corporations over human rights victims. While the decision will allow some multinational corporations to avoid being sued in the United States for business activities overseas, the real significance of the Court’s decision is that it provides a wise example of judicial restraint and deference to the role of Congress and the President to set American foreign policy.

Shell E&P Ireland has said it is conducting an internal investigation, following the inadvertent cutting of a gas pipe at the Corrib gas terminal earlier this month.
The incident, which occurred during work on water pipes at the terminal site in north Mayo, resulted in nitrogen being released into the atmosphere.
As a precaution, all nitrogen was “vented off”, according to the company. The Ballinaboy terminal built to refine gas from the Corrib gas field is not yet active, as work is still continuing on the last section of the project – the onshore pipeline.

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L) is interested in acquiring new assets in the Gulf of Mexico, including those of Brazil‘s state-controlled oil company Petrobras, Shell’s Chief Executive Peter Voser said on Thursday.
No decision has been made on whether to purchase the oil exploration and production blocks that the Brazilian company
is selling in the Gulf, Voser told reporters in Rio de Janeiro.
But Shell will consider all the assets that Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PETR4.SA), as Petrobras is known, is hawking under a $9 billion asset-sale program, he added.

The companies backing the project—which include Exxon Mobil Corp., Eni Spa and Royal Dutch Shell PLC—in March missed the startup date Eni predicted last year. And now, after a decade of work and more than $30 billion in expenses, it isn’t clear when one of the world’s biggest untapped fields will produce its first drop of oil.
News release – Issued by Shell to Sea Friday 19th April 2013Shell has admitted that on Monday, the 8th April, they had to vent all the nitrogen currently in the gas pipes at the Bellanaboy refinery, after they mistakenly cut a gas pipe. Shell claim the reason for this was the gas pipe was mistaken for a water pipe in the refinery and was cut. The gas pipes on the refinery site are currently filled with nitrogen to inhibit corrosion. The incident only came to light because a local resident contacted Midwest Radio with details of the incident. Shell confirmed the incident took place one week after the event. [1]
After Esther Kiobel recently sought my advice, anticipating the possible decision that has just been announced, I put her into contact with a Dutch law firm with a view to instigating a lawsuit against Royal Dutch Shell in the Netherlands. Hopefully that process is now underway.By John Donovan

Esther, who alleges that her husband Barinem Kiobel was executed by the Nigerian regime with the alleged backing of Shell, has correctly described Shell as an evil corporation.
Yesterday the Supreme Court ruled in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell) that Esther Kiobel may not proceed in her case against Shell for aiding and abetting in the torture and murder of her husband. In addition to setting back Esther’s quest for justice, the Court’s decision has two major effects: It limits accountability for gross human rights abuse committed abroad and it gives foreign corporations preferential treatment over domestic businesses.
In 1995, Dr. Barinem Kiobel was kidnapped, tortured, and executed by hanging following a trial before a military tribunal that was internationally denounced and widely condemned as a sham along with eight other people. Dr. Kiobel was a leader of a non-violent organization that protested Shell’s polluting of the land in the Ogoni region of Nigeria. To quash the protest, Shell allegedly sent corporate officers to meet with the Nigerian government and provided funding and training to the Nigerian military for “security operations” that resulted in years of violent abuse, including harassment, beatings, rape, torture and ultimately death.

Noble Corp, owner of the world’s third-largest offshore drilling fleet, said on Thursday Royal Dutch Shell Plc was in talks to extend its contract to use the Noble Discoverer beyond February 2014, underlining its long-term plans for the offshore Arctic.
The Discoverer is undergoing repairs in South Korea after Shell postponed its 2013 drilling plans for offshore Alaska after a problematic foray there last year.
But Roger Hunt, Noble’s senior vice-president for marketing and contracts, said recent moves to push ahead with drilling in the Russian Arctic by Exxon Mobil Corp and Rosneft underlined the potential of the overall region. Hunt did not see the decision last week by ConocoPhillips to defer its drilling off the coast of Alaska as indicative of the industry losing interest.

The Supreme Court’s conservatives dealt a major blow Wednesday to the ability of American federal courts to hold violators of international human rights accountable. The court declared that a 1789 law called the Alien Tort Statute does not allow foreigners to sue in American courts to seek redress “for violations of the law of nations occurring outside the United States.”
In the case at issue, Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, Nigerian citizens alleged that, from 1992 to 1995, multinational oil companies working in Nigeria aided the military dictatorship that tortured and killed protesters who fought the environmental damage caused by the oil operations. These companies did business in the United States. But Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., writing for the majority, said that even where claims of atrocities “touch and concern the territory of the United States, they must do so with sufficient force” to overcome a presumption that the statute does not apply to actions outside this country.
