Shell ‘uses sabotage claims to avoid blame for Nigeria oil spills’

Screen Shot 2013-02-03 at 10.25.25The National Contact Point (NCP) agency will today give Shell a rap on the knuckles for its reporting of its spills in the Niger Delta region, some of which have been highly damaging to the environment. NCP has reached this conclusion following an investigation into accusations by Amnesty International and Friends of the Earth International that Shell has exaggerated the proportion of spills caused by sabotage to avoid paying compensation and to reduce damage to its reputation.

TOM BAWDEN: WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE 2013

Shell’s persistent claims that theft and sabotage are responsible for almost all the oil spills at its operation in Nigeria could have been exaggerated, an international watchdog has found.

The National Contact Point (NCP) agency will today give Shell a rap on the knuckles for its reporting of its spills in the Niger Delta region, some of which have been highly damaging to the environment.

The agency, set up to oversee OECD guidelines on multi-national companies, said: “Given the many years of discussion about the causes of oil spills in Nigeria, Royal Dutch Shell management should have had a more cautious attitude about the percentage of oil spills caused by the sabotage,” noting that the data they are based on is “not absolute”. read more

By Eric Martin, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez and Helder Marinho: June 18, 2013

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said he’s confident Congress will end the state oil monopoly this year, opening the way for companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) to tap the nation’s reserves.

In the model envisioned by Pena Nieto, state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos would develop some fields, while others are tapped by foreign and private companies. He declined to discuss more details of the proposal, or whether it would require a change in the constitution. read more

Carson wants Shell to hurry cleanup of Carousel tract contamination

Screen Shot 2013-06-18 at 08.07.19

06/17/2013

The City Council Tuesday night will discuss issuing a letter opposing Shell Oil’s initial cleanup plans for the Carousel tract neighborhood, which was contaminated by a former oil tank farm that occupied the 50-acre area until the 1960s.

Shell has been preparing a plan, under the supervision of the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, for about five years. A specific plan, now in its final stages, calls for digging up contaminated soil, cleaning it, and replacing it with fresh soil in the 285-home development. But council members said Shell Oil is not working quickly enough considering residents face health concerns. read more

How Shell is trying to send a chill through activist groups across the country

Screen Shot 2013-06-18 at 07.35.35If the court rules in Shell’s favor, it would have a profound chilling effect on First Amendment rights across the country. Nothing would stop other corporations from taking similar preemptive legal action against anyone they deem to be likely protesters. This case isn’t just about the fate of the Arctic. It is about the state of our democracy.

One of our most important rights as Americans is the freedom to express ourselves. This takes the form of voting, it takes the form of activism, and it takes the form of our First Amendment right to free speech.

This summer, the 9th Circuit Court in California is weighing the question of whether companies have the right to take preemptive legal action against peaceful protesters for hypothetical future protests. This will be an extraordinary decision that could have a significant impact on every American’s First Amendment rights. read more

Shell law returns to Broadhaven Bay

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 15.42.20Shell safety boat sinks kayak while detaining others on Broadhaven Bay: Almost immediately after entering the bay the kayakers progress was obstructed by six Shell security and safety boats. The security boats, staffed with IRMS, Shell’s security personnel, then proceeded to grab hold of kayakers and their kayaks and detain them against their will.  On some occasions kayakers were dragged by the security boats through the water, sometimes for up to 15 minutes.  In a departure from previous years when Shell carried out work in Broadhaven Bay, no Gardaí were present at the scene.

Yesterday, the 16th June Shell began the operation to lay an umbilical from landfall at Glengad to the Corrib Gas field.  At 5pm, six kayakers from Rossport Solidarity Camp entered the waters of Broadhaven Bay, in order to protest against the imposition of the Corrib Gas project on the local community.  The protest marks the beginning of two weeks of action against the project.[1]

Whether the UK can get shale gas flowing as fast as the US has remains in doubt, but Centrica seems ready to give it a try

The Observer,

Expect to see more big names from the oil industry, such as Shell, ExxonMobil and Statoil, moving into the British shale sector now that one of their competitors – Centrica – has taken the plunge. The international companies have always taken a keen interest in the UK fracking scene, despite endless statements from their chief executives that there are better prospects in China and elsewhere.

There is some speculation this weekend that the reason Centrica paid a fairly toppy price for the stake in the Bowland Shale licence from Cuadrilla Resources was because it faced competition from Shell and others. read more

Screen Shot 2013-06-15 at 09.03.44Malabu Oil Deal: I Got Only N37bn  says Dan Etete 15 June 2013

Former minister of petroleum, Dan Etete, has told a British High Court that he is not the owner of Malabu Oil and Gas. He also denied receiving $1.1 billion (N173 billion) transferred to Malabu by the federal government. The money was allegedly paid by oil giants, Shell and Eni on behalf of the federal government to Malabu.

Etete in a testimony he gave on a breach of contract suit brought against him over the sale of the controversial oil block OPL 245, said that he only made N37.5 billion ($250 million) working as a consultant for Malabu. read more

Shell is hoping to extend the life of an offshore oil field in Brazil’s Campos Basin until 2021, potentially adding five years of operation and as many as 20 million more barrels, Osman Tosun, the company’s field development manager, said Friday.

Shell on Friday spudded on of four new wells planned at the mature Bijupira-Salema field in an effort to extent production, Tosun told the Brazil Offshore conference in Macae.
