BRIGHTON TWP. — Shell Chemicals Co. has entered into a short-term lease of the old Michael Baker International headquarters on Dutch Ridge Road.

Shell spokesman Michael Marr said Wednesday the 76,000-square-foot building will be used to house employees during the five-year construction phase of a cracker plant in Potter Township. Those employees will be tasked with moving the site from a construction phase into an operational phase, Marr said.

“We intend to use the facility during construction phase to position some workers who will transition the site into the operational phase once the construction is completed,” Marr said. “At that point, most of that personnel will transition into the site.”

Financial and other details weren’t made available Wednesday, though Marr did say the lease is short term. It’s unclear when employees will begin to occupy the building.

The former headquarters in Brighton Township is located near the old Horsehead Corp. site in Potter, the site of Shell’s proposed multibillion-dollar ethane cracker plant.

The location, which served as Michael Baker International’s headquarters from 1972 to 1992, is one exit from Potter on Interstate 376.

Michael Baker International has had the property on the market for sale or lease for years now, but Shell maintained Wednesday the company has no plans to buy the building or build a new structure there.
