Shell Sinking in OPL 245 Quicksand

By John Donovan

Did Shell senior management and their spook advisors really think that it was possible to get into bed with a shyster such as Dan Etete and remain uncontaminated?

There were too many crooks, too many players and too much money involved to keep the $1bn plus OPL 245 deal secret. It was only a matter of time before the corruption scandal was bound to unravel.

The facts emerged gradually, in various litigation, in multiple jurisdictions, including the USA, mainly over the division of the spoils.

An article published earlier this week by Sahara Reporters lists some of the Nigerian players, including three Nigerian Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan.

Various Shell subsidiaries are involved in the scandal including SNUD (Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited) mentioned eighteen times in the Sahara Reporters article.

Malcolm Brinded is one of the senior Shell people in danger of being sucked under, together with some former MI6 spies working for Shell.

Is it a coincidence that cyber-attacks against this website have ramped up in line with our increased coverage of the OPL 245 scandal, already the most persistent and permanently visible anywhere?

The litigation continues in multiple jurisdictions with Shell achieving a successful verdict today in the Nigerian Courts on one issue. Corruption is endemic in Nigeria including the judiciary.

Hence, Nigerians understandable preference to sue Shell in the USA, the UK or the Netherlands, almost anywhere other than Nigeria.

One thing is clear. Shell does not intend to give up easily its ill-gotten gains.
