Shell’s leaked global organisation changes: Part 3

By John Donovan

Today we publish another sizeable chunk from Shell’s current internal consultative document which, although directed at Shell’s Dutch employees, includes a detailed description of Shell’s proposed global organisation changes. Still no legal action by Shell to prevent publication of its plans.

Consequences of the proposed change for the current PTD global organisation EC-1, -2 &-3

As shown above a new integrated Technology organization is proposed to be created that will consolidate all technology development and deployment activities, and will provide end-to-end accountability for technology commercialisation. The current PTD organization would become part of the new Technology organization.

PTD:

  • The EVP DS Technology position, located in the UK, ceases to exist.
  • The PA position based in NL supporting the EVP DS will change reporting line to the new EVP Technology, this is an interim solution, the position will be reviewed together with the ASU reviewVP CRI & Criterion, (PTD/Z, PTD/R)
  • The VP CRI & Criterion role, located in US, cease to exist
  • 15 EC-3 roles reporting currently to the VP CRI/Criterion cease to exist. Among these, 2 are located in the UK (GM Criterion EMEAR, GM EO Catalyst EU), 10 in the US and 3 in Singapore.
  • The GM ECS currently reporting to the VP CRI/ Criterion changes reporting line to the GM New Business Development.VP Strategic Customers (PTD/S)
  • The VP Strategic Customers role, located in UK cease to exist
  • It is proposed that the activities currently performed by the direct reports of the VP Strategic Customers (EC-3) would now report at EC-4.
  • It is proposed a GM Technology Licensing will be created and based in the Netherlands. It is proposed the GM-ship will include 3 Regional Licensing Managers (EMEAR, APAC, & Americas) to execute the licensing sales strategies and provide single points of contact for licensing and services customers. There will also be a Licensing Refining Technology Manager (NL), Licensing Technology Manager Gas & Chemicals (NL), NOV Commercial Manager (NL), Licensing Technology Manager Indirect Sales (NL) and the creation of 2 new Licensing Development Managers (NL), to accelerate technology and maturation of market introduction

VP Catalyst Technology (PTD/C)

In the Catalyst technology, currently there are 6 GMships. Two GM-ships, one in NL and one in US support Criterion Catalyst company, the world’s largest supplier of hydroprocessing catalysts for refining applications. Three GM-ships, one in NL and two in US support CRI Catalyst Company for chemicals, environmental and gas conversion applications. A final GM-ship in India is focused on developing novel catalytic materials.

In the new organizational design, the Catalyst GM-ships will be consolidated (by reducing from six to four) in three main application areas – GM Refining Catalysts, GM Chemical Catalysts, GM Gas Conversion Catalysts, while maintaining the GM-ship for Novel Catalytic Materials. This would provide for clearer line of site to the business and bring groups with similar areas of focus together. Analytical capability which has grown over time within the Catalyst Technology group is also proposed to be moved out of Catalyst Technology and into the Analytical group to remove duplication and put the right work in the right place.

  • The VP Catalyst Technology role, located in the US ceases to exist
  • The position Safety and Facilities Oper. Repr. SAFOR, currently reporting to the VP Catalyst Technology, located in the US, ceases to exist.
  • The Manager Catalyst Innovation, located in NL, changes job title to GM Gas Catalyst Technology and moves reporting line to the VP Catalyst and Refining Technology
  • The General Manager (Refining Catalyst Technology), located in US, changes its job title to GM Refining Catalyst Technology and moves reporting line to the VP Catalyst and Refining Technology
  • The General Manager Novel Catalytic materials, located in India, changes reporting line to the VP Catalyst and Refining Technology
  • The Global Manager (Chemicals Catalyst Technology), located in US, changes job title to GM Chemicals Catalyst Technology, moves reporting line to the VP Catalyst and Refining Technology
  • The Principal Scientist, located in NL, changes reporting line to the Team Lead Hydroprocessing Catalyst Technology
  • The General Manager (EO Global R&D), located in US, changes its job title to EO Global R&D Manager and moves reporting line to the VP Catalyst and Refining Technology
  • The PT-Trade Controls Manager, located in US, moves reporting line to the GM Chemicals Catalyst Technology
  • The Project Leader, located in US, moves reporting line to the GM Refining Catalyst Technology
  • The Manager Zeolyte Catalyst Technology, located in NL, changes job title to Team Leader Hydrocracking Catalyst Technology and moves reporting line to the GM Refining Catalyst TechnologyGM Refining Technology (PTD/TR)
Refining Technology (under the GM Refining Technology) has changed its delivery model effective 1st June 2017 as part of the Manufacturing Asset Support Delivery Model Review. In the new model, routine technology asset support has been moved into one new support organisation within DS-M (the new “Manufacturing Support & Excellence” organisation). This enabled direct impact to the business with simpler access to support from a single multi-disciplinary team, fewer funding discussions, improved budget control and a faster response to issues. The P&T Refining Technology organization has become a smaller, nimbler organization focusing on differentiating capabilities in line with the Delivery Model principles. Consequently, it is not proposed to make substantive changes within PTD/TR at EC-4 and below.
