Printed below is an English translation of information published today by Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV (NAM), a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil each owning a 50% share in the company responsible for the earthquake prone Groningen Gas Field and consequential potential bill for untold billions in damages.

Clear explanation about Hardenberg gas extraction

The blue NAM infotruck this week, from Tuesday 6 to Thursday 8 February, in Hardenberg and a number of surrounding villages. Residents from this region could go here with their questions about gas extraction and the possible consequences.

‘It is unlikely that earthquakes or subsidence will occur as a result of gas extraction by the NAM’, one of the visitors to the Dedemsvaart Courant told us. A total of around 200 visitors were informed in the NAM Infotruck.

Update Winningsplan

For four of the eight gas fields in Hardenberg, NAM submitted an update of the Winningsplan at the end of 2017. Due to recent reports in the local media, many questions were asked in Hardenberg about current gas extraction. Many people expressed their concerns about the possible consequences of extraction in Hardenberg.

Small gas fields

NAM wins gas in 220 small gas fields in the Netherlands, including at Hardenberg. For almost 70 years, NAM has been licensed to extract gas in the municipality of Hardenberg. The risk of earthquakes due to gas extraction is low here.

Production figures NAM 2017

In the 2017 calendar year, NAM has won a total of 31.2 billion cubic meters (m3) of natural gas. NAM produced 7.6 billion m3 of gas from the small gas fields on land and sea, while 23.6 billion m3 was produced from the Groningen gas field in the 2017 calendar year. Oil production increased to 418,125 m3, mainly from the fields in Schoonebeek in Drenthe.

Production figures for natural gas by NAM (in calendar years)

The volume of natural gas produced decreased by 4.6 billion m3 compared to 2016, while in 2016 another 35.8 billion m3 of gas was produced. The decrease can mainly be explained by the production limitation for the Groningen field, a decrease of 4 billion m3. Production from this field will decrease further in 2018 due to additional production restrictions.

In addition to the lower production from the Groningen field, gas extraction from small fields also declined. In 2017, NAM won a total of 7.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the approximately 125 small gas fields (on land and sea), a decrease of 0.6 billion cubic meters.
