The Heritage Oil trail of Shell’s MI6 hire, Guy Colegate

By John Donovan

Shell is the common factor in three multi-million dollar Nigerian oil deals now attracting attention. Namely, the notorious OPL 245 (involving ENI), OML 42 (which Shell sold to Neconde) and OML 30 (which Heritage Oil purchased from Shell).

Shell’s MI6 hire, Guy Colegate, was in turn recruited by Heritage Oil because of his involvement in OPL 245, no doubt aware of his exotic pedigree. In an article reporting that he had joined Heritage, Colegate was described as “Shell’s super negotiator“. Colegate is currently a defendant in the OPL 245 criminal case subsequently brought against him in the Italian courts.

He was one of Shell’s MI6 “people” mentioned by Shell CEO Ben van Beurden in his wiretapped telephone discussion with then Shell CFO Simon Henry, whose sudden departure and controversial payoff was itself the subject of media coverage. The wiretapped discussion took place during a police raid at Shell HQ in the Hague.

Other Shell executive defendants include another Shell MI6 hire, John Copleston, former Shell Chairman Malcolm Brinded (who received a letter of reprimand from a Shell CEO  for his role in an earlier scandal) and a former Shell VP, Peter Robinson.

In view of the way Shell has turned against Peter Robinson, it would not be surprising if he has flipped (as informed speculation suggests) and is now giving evidence against Shell? He is likely to know where the bodies are buried. We do know that Mr Robinson was involved in OPL 245 and OML 42. Did he also have an involvement in OML 30?

In April 2011, Mike Adenuga attempted to buy Shell’s OML 30 for $1.2 billion dollars. The block was later sold to Heritage Oil for $850 million dollars. A colourful character, Tony Buckingham (“TB”?), a former mercenary, is the founder and Chairman of Heritage Oil. A number of his management colleagues have a military background.

Comments about Guy Coleman joining Heritage Oil have been posted on my website on an anonymous basis by “A Mole”. The same source has supplied me with information and allegations that have not been published. Instead, I will be passing it all on to those with appropriate investigative credentials.
