Russia has a ship to finish Nord Stream 2

From our editor

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia itself has a pipeline ship to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany. The newspaper Kommersant reported this on Thursday, based on anonymous sources.

Earlier this week, under pressure from US sanctions legislation, the Dutch-Swiss offshore group Allseas stopped the construction of Nord Stream 2. This pipeline runs from the Russian Oest-Luga through the Baltic Sea and the Baltic Sea to the German Greifswald.

55 billion cubic meters

The pipeline would initially be delivered in the first half of 2020. It is actually about two parallel pipes, each of 1230 kilometers. Cost of construction: $ 11 bln.

The pipeline can transport 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Germany every year. This should increase European energy security. The Russian Gazprom supplies the natural gas. Partners are also the Austrian ÖMV, the German companies Uniper and Wintershall, the French Engie and the Anglo-Dutch Shell.

However, US President Trump says he sees the gas pipeline as a risk to European energy security and a threat to national security. Last Friday, he signed a sanctions law against companies that lay the pipeline on the seabed. For Allseas, which works on the pipeline with mega-ship Pioneering Spirit but also has activities in the US, this was a reason to stop the work immediately.

Months delay

Putin spoke on Wednesday evening at a meeting with Russian businessmen about the Russian pipeline ship, Kommersant reported. The president said the sanctions delay the completion of the project by a few months.

In 2016, the Russian energy giant Gazprom purchased a special pipe laying vessel named Academic Cherskiy. It would serve as a backstop if European companies stopped working on Nord Stream 2. The Academic Cherskiy would now be in the port of Nakhodka, some 85 kilometers from Vladivostok, in the far east of Russia. According to sources at Gazprom, the Academic Cherskiy works a bit slower than the Pioneering Spirit, the colossal ship of Allseas that worked on the Nord Stream 2.
