NEWS REPORT: Offshore Alliance claim Shell’s Prelude FLNG thrusters broken

UNION Members from the Offshore Alliance have claimed Shell’s massive Prelude FLNG vessel offshore Western Australia suffered maintenance issues to two of its thrusters.

I am having difficulties understanding why there are such extensive difficulties with the main power plant reliability?
I understand the steam-driven power plant consisting of several boilers supplying steam turbine driven generators of around 100 megawatts, quite a high figure so at least 4 or 5 boilers and generator sets. These boilers are designed to be dual fired using fuel gas or diesel. If gas supply fails, change over to diesel automatically takes place or should do. We know this because LNG was introduced on board to initially cool the LNG storage tanks down and the boil-off would be used as fuel for the boilers saving expensive diesel and reduce harmful emissions.
This arrangement has been around for many years in LNG plants and proved to be extremely reliable, but as we now see is not the case on Prelude.
Not only is a main power plant suffering major problem but even the emergency power system failed to operate leaving only battery-powered lighting on escape routes. All the main shut down systems would or should have functioned so all ventilation off and dampers closed so we have upwards of 200 people in the safe refuge with no fresh air or water supplies.
The Australian press reports a special helicopter sent fully loaded with cardboard disposable poop pots.
I wonder how Mr Jagar is now regarding his rash statements of such a perfect project it would be boring! Hopefully very embarrassed.
I do hope that Shell Australia and the Hague take the time and provide the financial resources to resolve all these teething problems so that the on and offshore Offshore Operations staff, at whatever level, can indeed be proud to be part of a “game-changing” leap into the future.
