OilPrice.com: Shell Not Competing With BP Over Net Zero Emissions Goals

Shell doesn’t intend to “get into an arms race” with peer supermajor BP over goals to reduce its carbon footprint, Maarten Wetselaar, Shell’s Integrated Gas & New Energies Director, told The Times a week after BP joined the pack of oil majors that have set carbon-reducing goals.

In December 2018, in an industry first, Shell said that it plans to set short-term targets for reducing the net carbon footprint of the energy products it sells, and to link those targets with executive remuneration. read more

Reuters: Groningen gas output fall to prevent earthquake risk ahead of target

UPDATE 1-Groningen gas output fall to prevent earthquake risk ahead of target

FEBRUARY 21, 2020

* By mid 2022 no need for production in average year

* Groningen was once Europe’s largest onshore gas field

AMSTERDAM, Feb 21 (Reuters) – Gas production at Groningen in the northern Netherlands can be lowered to 10 billion cubic metres (BCM) this year, the government said on Friday, beating an initial 2020 target to cut output at the field because of earthquake risk.

The Dutch government has said it would lower production at Groningen, once Europe’s largest onshore gas field, as quickly as possible after a series of tremors caused widespread damage to homes and buildings. read more

I would give this company zero stars if i could.

I would give this company zero stars if i could. This company has hiked up my payments. They were great when they were First Utility. Even their cheapest offering is useless. My marketing preferences are by email but they keep trying to phone & message me. I complained to them by email & they agreed that they should contact me by email only, yet they carried on contacting me by phone even though i told them that i’m profoundly deaf. They passed all my details on to SMS even though i asked them not to. SMS have been hounding me stating that ”Shell Energy are upgrading to the next generation of meters & have arranged SMS to complete your installation”. How on earth can Shell Energy arrange for a meter to be fitted without consulting me? I have blocked all their calls. Shell are using bully boy tactics. I’m now moving to Octopus. Shell could not come anywhere near the prices that Octopus have offered me. Shell & SMS should hang their heads in shame for using bully boy tactics. My data is being shared even though i asked it not to be. They are also STILL trying to contact me by phone calls & text messages even though my marketing preferences are email. read more

The Times: Shell rejects ‘arms race’ with BP over carbon cuts

Friday February 21, 2020

Royal Dutch Shell will not “get into an arms race” with BP over carbon targets, a senior executive has said, in a sign that Europe’s biggest oil group will not rush to match its rival’s “net zero” pledge.

The Anglo-Dutch group was the first oil major to set long-term ambitions related to emissions from customers using its products, pledging in 2017 to halve the intensity of its carbon footprint by 2050.

BP had been seen as a laggard on climate targets but last week Bernard Looney, its new chief executive, leapfrogged rivals with an ambition to eliminate the carbon footprint of all the oil and gas it produces by 2050. read more

METRO: Business briefing: Drivers feel empowered to switch to electric cars

SEVEN out of ten Britons plan to buy an electric car when they trade in their current vehicle, a survey shows.

Cheaper fuel costs and being seen to do more to clean up the planet are major motivating factors, found Shell Energy.

Another is the phasing out of petrol and diesel cars — after the government revealed sales of new ones will be ended in 2035, five years earlier than planned.

Colin Crooks, the chief executive of Shell Energy, said: ‘We support the need for the UK to move faster to meet climate targets and research shows there is public support for the earlier ban on traditional car sales.’ read more

FT: Global LNG demand to double by 2040, Shell predicts

in London

Global demand for liquefied natural gas is expected to double to 700m tonnes by 2040 as energy consumption, particularly in Asia, rises and as the world shifts away from dirtier burning fuels, Royal Dutch Shell said on Thursday.

“The global LNG market continued to evolve in 2019, with demand increasing for LNG and natural gas in power and non-power sectors,” said Maarten Wetselaar, Shell’s head of gas and new energies. “Record supply investments will meet people’s growing need for the most flexible and cleanest-burning fossil fuel.” read more

EURACTIV: Biggest battery in Europe set to land on British shores

By Sam Morgan | EURACTIV.com

Oil and gas giant Shell has plans for a 100-megawatt grid storage battery in the west of England. It is slated to be the biggest battery in Europe once it is completed later this year and will be crucial to the UK’s quest to remain the continent’s top wind power player.

The battery project in the county of Wiltshire aims to store renewable power in two 50MW cells and then sell it to consumers when demand and prices are high.

“Projects like this will be vital for balancing the UK’s electricity demand and supply as wind and solar power play bigger roles in powering our lives,” said Shell Energy Europe vice president David Wells. read more

Climate change is one of the biggest concerns of humanity right now. Never in history, such changes have occurred so quickly and led to the results they do now. Greta Thunberg has made it common for young people to speak about climate change with adults. Student engagement in pro-climate movements has largely increased. It is not purely research work that evaluates the impact of changes. Such a job can be done by professionals from EssayPro.com Customer Research Paper Writing. It is more about taking a proactive position to prevent such changes from happening. read more

Reuters: Italian judge puts Nigerian businessman on trial in oil graft case

MILAN, Feb 19 (Reuters) – An Italian judge has ordered a Nigerian businessman to stand trial for alleged international corruption relating to a Nigeria oil graft case involving Eni and Shell, a judicial source and his lawyer said on Wednesday. Milan prosecutors allege that Alhai Aliyu Abubakar played a central role in one of the oil industry’s biggest scandals in years, handing out more than $500 million in cash to powerful Nigerian government officials.

The money is alleged to come out of the $1.3 billion licence fee paid by Eni and Shell for access to the OPL-245 offshore oilfield located in the southern Niger Delta. read more

LA Times: Alphabet shuts down its power-generating kites project

Google parent company Alphabet Inc. is shutting down its power-generating-kites firm Makani, the first closure of a “moonshot” project since Alphabet founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped back from management in December.

Shell said it was “exploring options” to take on Makani’s technology and keep developing it. “Offshore wind has the potential to reach the large-scale generation capacity that society needs to transition to a lower-carbon energy system,” said Dorine Bosman, vice president of Shell Wind Development. “We believe that Makani remains one of the leading airborne-wind technologies in the world.” read more

Reuters: Reformer shut at Shell Convent, Louisiana, refinery after fire – sources

HOUSTON (Reuters) – A catalytic reformer was shut on Sunday night at Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s (RDSa.L) 211,270-barrel-per-day (bpd) refinery in Convent, Louisiana, after a brief fire, said sources familiar with plant operations.

The reformer has the capacity to process 40,000 bpd of feedstock, according to Refinitiv Eikon.

Shell spokesman Ray Fisher said the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries.

Fisher also said Shell is investigating the cause of the fire.

He declined to discuss the status of individual units at the refinery, but said, “We will bring our units back on line only when it is safe to do so.” read more
