Nigerian court freezes Shell accounts ahead of Aiteo lawsuit

The lawsuit is latest in a string of legal headaches for the biggest international oil company operating in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil exporter.

By Libby George: FEBRUARY 19, 2021

LAGOS (Reuters) – A federal court in Lagos has issued an injunction barring Royal Dutch Shell’s Nigerian subsidiaries from withdrawing money at 20 local banks until it ringfences potential damages in a lawsuit brought against the oil major by Aiteo Eastern E&P.

Aiteo is seeking about $4 billion in total over alleged problems with the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) pipeline it bought from the Anglo-Dutch group in 2015 and over claims Shell undercounted its oil exports. read more

Shell’s past sins in Nigeria catching up with the oil giant at last

Shell’s past sins in Nigeria catching up with the oil giant at last

The recent UK Supreme Court judgement represents a major defeat for Shell after decades of evading legal retribution for its evil plunder and pollution in Nigeria.

The crusading solicitors Leigh Day (London) – the scourge of errant corporations, brought the action against Shell on behalf of Nigerian communities impacted over many years by Shell’s horrific environmental legacy in Nigeria.

My help was sought by Leigh Day in bringing the action after Leigh Day discovered “invaluable” information on my website royaldutchshellplc.com.  read more

Shell’s new ‘Sky 1.5’ scenario has scaled up nature-based solutions, but the oil-and-gas major’s pathway is nearly identical to the Paris Agreement’s ‘well-below 2C’ goal, an analysis by Carbon Brief revealed.

Brazilian residents sue Braskem in Dutch court over salt mines

The case is the latest attempt by local communities to seek compensation from large commodities companies in European courts after the UK Supreme Court on Friday allowed Nigerian residents to sue Royal Dutch Shell (RDS) in England over years of oil spills. “This is, sadly, yet another case of a giant corporation that is more than happy to exploit the natural riches of an area but has had little consideration for those who live in it…

Shell’s Strategy Is Satisfactory

Shell’s Strategy Is Satisfactory

The Global Investor: Feb. 14, 2021

Summary

  • This article takes a close look at Shell’s Strategy Day 2021, which focused on a net-zero emissions target and the businesses that Shell plans to operate.
  • Ultimately, Shell isn’t changing its strategy too much, sticking to its core oil and gas businesses.
  • By focusing on oil and gas and value over volume, Shell is a safer bet than BP which is betting big on a risky corporate restructuring.

The purpose of this article is to analyze Shell’s recent and very important Strategy Day. Shell had promised to give a lot of detail on an organizational restructuring at this event and it had the potential to radically change Shell’s direction. This means the Strategy Day presentations had a possibility to change my bullish thesis on the company. In that article I also gave some of my expectations of what I expected to see in Shell’s Strategy Day, and here I review the key takeaways of the Strategy Day and what they mean for my bullish thesis. read more

Editorial: Big oil confronts climate change – not a minute too soon

On Thursday, one of the world’s largest oil companies — Royal Dutch Shell — confirmed it will never again produce as much oil as it did in 2019. Peak oil production at Shell, said CEO Ben van Beurden, has come and gone.

The week before, ExxonMobil had made a similarly telling announcement: It is spending billions on a subsidiary formed to advance technologies to reduce the company’s carbon emissions and develop new products to help its customers do the same. read more

Shell puts electric charge into green energy future

Shell puts electric charge into green energy future

Emily Gosden, Energy Editor The Times

Royal Dutch Shell plans to operate as many as 2.5 million electric vehicle charging points globally by 2030 under a new emissions-reduction strategy that will see its oil output decline.

The Anglo-Dutch oil giant sought to flesh out its 2050 net zero emissions goal with a plan to focus on customer-facing business such as electricity sales, rather than power generation like its peers. It intends to operate half a million charging points by 2025, up from 60,000 today, and could increase this to 2.5 million by the end of the decade. read more

Nigerians win UK court OK to sue Shell over oil spills

LONDON (Reuters) – The UK Supreme Court on Friday allowed a group of 42,500 Nigerian farmers and fishermen to sue Royal Dutch Shell (RDS) in English courts after years of oil spills in the Niger Delta contaminated land and groundwater.

Senior judges said there was an arguable case that UK-domiciled Shell, one of the world’s biggest energy companies, is responsible, in the latest test of whether multinationals can be held to account for the acts of overseas subsidiaries. read more
