British court rulings reflect global movement towards greater accountability for multinational corporations

MILAN, March 17 (Reuters) – A Milan court is due to issue a verdict on Wednesday in the oil industry’s biggest corruption trial, a case centred around the purchase of a Nigerian oilfield by Eni ENI.MI and Royal Dutch Shell RDSa.L for $1.3 billion a decade ago.

After more than three years of proceedings and 74 hearings, judges withdrew to their chambers on Wednesday to consider their verdict, said Marco Tremolada, who heads the panel of judges, adding that a ruling was expected in the afternoon. read more

Russia’s Gazprom signs strategic cooperation agreement with Shell

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian gas producer Gazprom has signed a five-year strategic cooperation agreement with Shell, it said on Tuesday.

The cooperation will include exploring energy markets, “projects along the entire value chain”, digitalisation of technologies and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Gazprom said.

EU officials met Italy energy CEO despite corruption trial

The CEO of Italian energy giant Eni, Claudio Descalzi, was granted access to EU commissioners and officials to push the case for gas in the bloc’s energy transition – whilst allegedly involved in a billion-dollar corruption scandal, according to a report by Global Witness on Monday (15 March).

Descalzi is on trial in Italy, alongside his company Eni plus Royal Dutch Shell, for their roles in the $1.1bn (€921m) purchase of a Nigerian offshore oil field (called OPL 245) in 2011. read more

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs Group Inc’s board of directors on Monday nominated the chief financial officer of Royal Dutch Shell plc to become its newest member.

The Hague, March 15, 2021 – The Board of Royal Dutch Shell plc (“RDS”) today announced the pounds sterling and euro equivalent dividend payments in respect of the fourth quarter 2020 interim dividend, which was announced on February 4, 2021 at US$0.1665 per A ordinary share (“A Share”) and B ordinary share (“B Share”).

Dividends on A Shares will be paid, by default, in euros at the rate of €0.1396 per A Share. Holders of A Shares who have validly submitted US dollars or pounds sterling currency elections by March 5, 2021 will be entitled to a dividend of US$0.1665 or 11.96p per A Share, respectively. read more

New York — Shell Chemical’s $6 billion petrochemical complex in Pennsylvania is now more than 70% complete and projected to be operational sometime in 2022, a company spokesman said March 12.”

Andrew Mackenzie named new Shell chairman

Royal Dutch Shell announced the appointment of Andrew Mackenzie as chairman with effect from the conclusion of the annual general meeting on May 18.

Mr Mackenzie will succeed Chad Holliday, who will step down the same day having served as chairman for six years, Shell said Thursday in a statement.

Mr Mackenzie, a British national, joined Shell’s board in October after a career in the energy, petrochemicals and resources sector, latterly as chief executive officer of mining giant BHP from 2013 to 2019. read more

(Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc appointed former BHP Group executive Andrew Mackenzie as chairman, and said its board would have as many women as men on it for the first time.

Mackenzie, who oversaw BHP’s retreat from shale, takes over from Chad Holliday, whose departure had been flagged since last year. It also appointed cyber expert Jane Lute, a move that will take its board to gender parity, the company said.

“Andrew brings to Shell his experience of leadership, his global outlook, and a deep understanding of the energy business and climate action,” the company said in the statement. read more

Shell’s 2020 carbon emissions fall on the back of fuel sales drop

LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell, owner of the world’s largest fuel retail network, said on Thursday its total greenhouse gas emissions dropped 16% in 2020 as oil and gas sales fell sharply due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Shell said in its annual report that total emissions from its oil wells to forecourt fuel sales fell to 1.38 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent last year, from 1.65 billion in 2019. read more

Shell says Nigeria Delta oil spill dropped by 40% in 2020

LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell said on Thursday the volume of crude oil spills caused by sabotage in Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta dropped by 40% in 2020 to 1,400 tonnes.

The total number of major spills caused by theft and sabotage also dropped to 122 incidents in 2020 from 156 incidents the previous year, Shell said in its annual report.

Shell is the operator of Nigeria main onshore oil and gas joint venture SPDC which has struggled for years to contain spills in the Delta caused due to operational incidents, theft and sabotage. read more
