The toxic warnings about Shell’s new Pennsylvania  ethylene cracker plant

Extract from a letter to the Beaver County Times about Shell’s new Pennsylvania  ethylene cracker plant

FROM DAVE SUTTON

In great detail, the article describes how the opening of this plant will render the Beaver Valley environment untenable for human habitation.

According to the self-proclaimed experts quoted, cancer will be rampant, the air will be toxic along with the water. Even the light and noise from the plant will destroy everyone’s well-being. However, the Beaver County Emergency Services stands ready to aid at a moment’s notice.

It is obvious that the reporters were either too young or ignored the history of Beaver County. I question how any of us could have survived the 20th century until circa 1985’s environment with four huge steel mills going full blast providing toxicity far beyond what this plant will emit with today’s environmental controls in place. LTV in Midland had every horizontal surface in town covered with a red coating of iron oxide and J&L in Aliquippa dumped slag in the Ohio River and lit the night sky with flames. B&W and Republic in Beaver Falls added with smoke from their stacks The fumes from these mills permeated the air 24 hours a day. Yet, we somehow survived. I wait with bated breath for the Times to publish Shell’s rebuttal to this article.
