Washington DC – Ah yes, Shell. The oil-soaked villain of the century, responsible for more destruction than we can count, is at it again—this time helping fuel Hurricane Helene, which claimed 227 lives across six states. No big deal, right? After all, it’s just another day in the office for Shell and its oily cronies, spewing profits while the planet burns.
According to a rapid analysis by World Weather Attribution, Helene’s deadly rampage has been supercharged by—wait for it—climate change! Who knew?! Well, Greenpeace sure did, and they’re calling out Big Oil for the catastrophic mess it’s created. Rolf Skar, Greenpeace USA National Campaigns Director, lays it out:
“The evidence is overwhelming: climate change is fueling the extreme weather patterns we are witnessing worldwide. Hurricane Helene is just one example of the increasing frequency and severity of storms. This week, Hurricane Milton has already reached Cat 5 and is projected to bring life-threatening hurricane force winds and a destructive storm surge to Florida. Those directly impacted by these disasters endure immense suffering, while major oil and gas companies continue to prioritise profits over the well-being of our planet and its people.”
Because clearly, why would Shell and their ilk give a damn about “well-being” when they’re raking in the cash? Your home is underwater? Your life is in shambles? Well, Shell’s stock is doing just fine, thank you very much.
And don’t worry, Ian Duff, Head of Greenpeace International’s Stop Drilling Start Paying campaign, doesn’t hold back either:
“The death and misery brought by storms like Helene and Milton are what we get while the oil and gas giants that are responsible take in massive profits. So long as nowhere is safe from the climate crisis, there must be no impunity for climate polluters.”
Oh, but let’s not forget the lawsuits! In their spare time, when they’re not busy cooking the planet, companies like Shell and TotalEnergies are launching intimidation lawsuits against anyone who dares expose their criminal negligence. Because nothing screams “innocent” like suing the very people who are trying to stop you from killing the planet.
Meanwhile, AccuWeather estimates the damage from Helene to be a casual $250 billion. But hey, that’s just another inconvenient stat for Shell to ignore while they keep drilling. Why worry about hurricanes and human suffering when your bottom line is thicker than oil?
Greenpeace is absolutely right—it’s time to make these climate villains pay up for the havoc they’ve unleashed. The question is, how long are we going to let them profit while the world drowns?
