Russia has a ship to finish Nord Stream 2

From our editor

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia itself has a pipeline ship to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany. The newspaper Kommersant reported this on Thursday, based on anonymous sources.

Earlier this week, under pressure from US sanctions legislation, the Dutch-Swiss offshore group Allseas stopped the construction of Nord Stream 2. This pipeline runs from the Russian Oest-Luga through the Baltic Sea and the Baltic Sea to the German Greifswald. read more

Why the World Worries About Russia/Shell/USA Nord Stream 2 Showdown

By Anna Shiryaevskaya and Dina Khrennikova | Bloomberg Dec. 24, 2019 at 7:06 a.m. GMT

A new natural gas pipeline into Europe from Russia is shaking up geopolitics. Nord Stream 2, as it’s called, worries leaders in Eastern Europe, has put German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the hot seat and most recently has become the target of U.S. sanctions. The punitive measures approved by U.S. President Donald Trump have stymied construction just as the final sections of pipe were about to be laid.

1. What is Nord Stream 2?

It’s a planned 1,230-kilometer (764-mile) undersea pipeline that will carry natural gas from Russian fields to the European network at Germany’s Baltic coast. It will double the capacity of an existing undersea route — the original Nord Stream — that opened in 2011. Russia’s Gazprom PJSC owns the project, with Royal Dutch Shell Plc and four other investors including Germany’s Uniper SE and Wintershall AG providing half of the 9.5 billion-euro ($10.7 billion) cost. Denmark removed one of the project’s last hurdles in October when it approved construction of the link through its waters. read more

Berlin convinced: sanctions cannot stop the construction of the last 160 km of Nord Stream 2

In brief

  • Allseas has stopped the construction of Nord Stream 2 under pressure from the American sanctions.
  • But the gas pipeline is simply being phased out, German politicians expect.
  • The latter does entail delays and higher costs.

Although the Dutch-Swiss offshore group Allseas has stopped the construction of Nord Stream 2 under pressure from US sanctions legislation, the gas pipeline from Russia to Germany will be phased out in the view of German politics. The sanctions will only lead to a few months delay and higher costs.

“I assume that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be delivered in the second half of 2020,” said Peter Beyer, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German parliament, in a conversation with radio station Deutschlandfunk on Monday. read more

Royal Dutch Shell hit by US sanctions against Nord Steam 2

English translation of an article published today by the Dutch FT

Dutch companies hit by US sanctions against Nord Stream 2

Dutch FD: From our editor: 23 Dec 2019

In brief

  • President Trump has announced sanctions for the construction of the Russian gas pipe Nord Stream 2.
  • The measure affects the Dutch offshore group Allseas and Shell.
  • Furious reactions about internal affairs interference from Germany and Brussels.

US President Donald Trump announced sanctions from Friday to Saturday against the construction of Nord Stream 2, the gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany. The project should be operational by mid-2020. 2100 kilometers of the gas pipeline is already finished, about 300 kilometers of pipelines are still missing.

A variety of international companies are involved in the project and are likely to be affected. Also Dutch companies. For example, the sanctions appear to be aimed particularly against the Dutch-Swiss offshore company Allseas by the Dutchman Edward Heerema. That immediately stopped its work for Nord Stream 2 on Saturday. read more

OILPRICE.COM: Nord Stream 2 Is “Past The Point Of No Return”

French electricity and gas firm Engie SA and Royal Dutch Shell are among other major companies alongside Gazprom which are major players in the controversial project.

Included in Wednesday’s just passed mammoth 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) — which increases the Pentagon budget by $22 billion (to a whopping $738 billion) — were long-threatened sanctions on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 underwater natural gas pipeline.

In the House bill, expected to be approved by the Senate sometime next week before Trump signs it into law, are measures which specifically target companies assembling the pipeline, a last ditch US effort to block the controversial 760-mile project that would allow Russia to export natural gas directly to Germany, depriving Ukraine of badly needed gas transit fees along the current route for Russian supplies. read more

Shell: New steel tariffs would have “little-to-no” impact on Beaver County cracker plant

Shell: New steel tariffs would have “little-to-no” impact on Beaver County cracker plant

By Chrissy Suttles: 3 Dec 2019

Shell Chemicals representatives say President Donald Trump’s plans to restore tariffs on some steel imports would have minimal impact on final construction of Beaver County’s ethane cracker plant.

POTTER TWP. — President Donald Trump plans to restore tariffs on steel imports from Brazil and Argentina, a move Shell Chemicals representatives said would have little impact on final construction of Beaver County’s ethane cracker plant.

“Generally, all of our major steel deliveries have been made to the site, so there would be no impact or minimal impact,” said Michael Marr, Shell Chemicals’ business integration lead. “The impact would only be financial, and would not change the overall finances of the project.” read more

QUARTZ: Virgin plastic pellets are the biggest pollution disaster you’ve never heard of

Before plastic is made into anything else, it is made into pellets. And those pellets are leaking everywhere. When completed, the new facility will pump out 1.8 million tons (1.6 million metric tons) of plastic each year.  The vast majority of that plastic, like the vast majority of all plastic made up to now, will likely not be recycled. And it will exist virtually forever, crumbling into microplastics that show up most everywhere scientists look for them. Those small spheres, sometimes known as “nurdles,” are a massive source of plastic pollution, escaping into the environment before they have a chance to be molded into a useful shape. With roughly 22,000 nurdles per pound of plastic, the Shell plant intends to produce the rough equivalent of 80 trillion nurdles per year. As the Royal Dutch Shell plant rises in Pennsylvania, environmental groups and scientists are worried about the lack of regulation to specifically address plastic pellet pollution. (Shell did not return a request for comment.)

Some 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a township adjacent to a state forest, oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell is building a sprawling new plant to support what it sees as the future of its business: making millions of tons of new, virgin plastic.

US president Trump visited the facility last week, highlighting the 5,000 construction jobs it has created. The plant is just one of more than 300 new plastic facilities proposed or permitted for the US in the near future. Shell, along with other major oil and gas companies like Exxon, sees plastic as one avenue for growth as natural gas prices plummet—and, longer-term, as a way to weather the world’s slow rejection of fossil fuels as an energy source. read more

Construction workers at Shell factory were asked to treat Trump kindly

Van onze redacteur: 19 August 2019

To the great satisfaction of the contractors, the thousands of construction workers from a Shell plant under construction northwest of Pittsburgh received President Donald Trump on Tuesday with loud applause.

The construction companies had asked their employees to treat the president in a friendly manner in an attempt to improve the fragile relationship between the White House and the trade unions. Jeering, protesting or shouting was not tolerated, a leaked memo said. Staying away was allowed, but then the overtime allowance would be reduced. read more

Trump Shell factory speech crowd members were paid to listen to him and banned from ‘anything viewed as resistance’

Workers ordered not to criticise the president

Workers at a Royal Dutch Shell plant in Pennsylvania were forced to choose between attending a speech by Donald Trump or earning less than their coworkers who did.

Attendance was optional, but contract workers who chose not to stand in the crowd would not qualify for time-and-a-half pay when they arrived at work on Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Workers at the unfinished Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex had to arrive at 7am, scan their ID cards and stand for hours until the US president’s speech began. read more

SHELL TO BE A BIG PLAYER IN CONTROVERSIAL MICROPLASTICS

SHELL TO BE A BIG PLAYER IN MICROPLASTICS

The timing of President Trump’s delayed visit to Shell’s new Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex, which will produce more than a million tons of plastic in the form of tiny pellets, turned out to be unfortunate.

It happened to coincide with the release of scientific research and evidence about the unknown consequences of airborne microplastics on the heath of “birds, fish, whales and people”.

Russia’s grasp on EU gas tightens despite Trump slating Germany

Mr Trump last year signed a law giving him the right to impose sanctions on companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. Royal Dutch Shell, BASF’s Wintershall unit, Uniper, OMV and Engie have agreed to provide Russia’s Gazprom with financing for the €9.5bn pipeline and could be at risk of penalties.

US President Donald Trump eased his tone about a Russian natural gas pipeline to Germany after a one-on-one meeting with President Vladimir Putin, shifting from the harsh criticism of Germany he’d levied in Europe last week. “We are going to be selling LNG and will have to be competing with the pipeline and I think we’ll compete successfully, although there is a little advantage locationally” because Russia is closer to buyers in Europe, Mr Trump told reporters at a news conference with Mr Putin after their meeting in Helsinki on Monday.
