Shell was not fully prepared when it launched its trouble-plagued Arctic offshore drilling program last year, and the oil company also fell short in overseeing key contractors in the effort, according to a federal report released Thursday.

The report follows a 60-day review by the Interior Department that focused on problems Royal Dutch Shell PLC experienced with its drilling vessels and a spill containment vessel. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the company will have to submit more comprehensive plans before it would be allowed to operate in the Arctic again. read more

The U.S. Coast Guard has turned over its investigation of violations on a Royal Dutch Shell PLC Arctic drill ship to the Department of Justice, officials said Friday.

The violations were found after the drilling season when the Noble Discoverer was in dock in Seward, Alaska. Shell’s other Arctic drill barge, the Kulluk, remains in a sheltered bay off Alaska’s Kodiak Island, where it was towed after grounding on New Year’s Eve.

The Coast Guard found 16 violations on the 571-foot Noble Discoverer after it completed drilling this summer in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northern coast. read more

A spokeswoman for the united command overseeing the salvage of Royal Dutch Shell PLC drill barge that ran aground on a remote Alaska island says no new information will be released until a vessel assessment is completed.

Shell’s drill vessel Kulluk (KUL’-uk) ran aground New Year’s Eve. It was pulled off the rocky bottom Jan. 6 and towed to a protected bay within Kodiak Island.

The operation is under the direction of a unified command structure made up of the Shell, the Coast Guard, and state and local authorities. read more

Arctic Battle: Oil Drilling Still Faces Environmental Concerns

By (@ceciliavegaABC) and ALEX WATERFIELD: Oct. 9, 2012

The bottom of the Chukchi Sea, off Alaska’s north shore, is one of the most hotly contested places under the sea.

It is here that Shell Oil, Co., is looking for oil and Greenpeace is trying to stop them.

The oil giant has spent years and billions of dollars jockeying to be first to strike and the payoff stands to be enormous. The ocean floor inside the Arctic Circle may hold a quarter of the Earth’s undiscovered oil, enough to drastically reduce the United States’ dependency on foreign supplies. read more

Shell Vessel Re-Anchors After Moving Toward Shore

INAUSPICIOUS START TO SHELL ARCTIC DEBUT (COMMENT BY JOHN DONOVAN)

KODIAK, Alaska July 15, 2012 (AP)

A Shell Oil drilling vessel slipped it anchorage Saturday and began moving toward shore in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands before it was re-anchored, the Coast Guard said.

The Nobel Discoverer got within 500 feet of an island near Dutch Harbor in Unalaska Bay, raising concerns of grounding.

But crews were apparently able to move the 571-foot vessel farther off shore and re-anchor it before that occurred, Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer Sara Francis said.

“They (crew members) did not feel any bumps, or that it touched anything,” she said. “There were no reports of any injuries, pollution or damage to the vessel.” read more

Shell to Pay $500,000 for Pollution in Texas

The settlement was reached after Harris County accused Shell Chemical, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, of failing to notify officials about the toxic releases

HOUSTON September 6, 2011 (AP)

Shell Chemical LP has agreed to pay $500,000 to a Texas County over five different air pollution events at its Deer Park refinery.

The settlement was reached after Harris County accused Shell Chemical, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, of failing to notify officials about the toxic releases. There are two schools and many homes close to the Shell refinery in Deer Park, about 18 miles southeast of Houston.

Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan says he is pleased Shell agreed under the terms of the agreement to notify officials within 24 hours of any chemical releases. The law already requires petrochemical companies to notify the county, but Shell apparently failed to do so in five events between 2008 and 2010. read more
