Four people have been arrested during a protest by Shell to Sea campaigners in Co Mayo.

A Shell to Sea spokesman said 50 people were involved in the demonstration today on Glengad Beach. 

He said one of those arrested is the son of Maura Harrington, who is on the fifth day of a hunger strike.

A Garda spokesman said three men and a woman were arrested this afternoon for public order offences. 

All four are being held at Belmullet Garda station. 

Ms Harrington (54) has said she will continue her hunger strike until the boat brought in by Shell to lay the Corrib offshore gas pipeline leaves Irish waters.  read more

Harrington hunger strike continues

High-profile Shell to Sea campaigner Maura Harrington has vowed to continue her hunger strike until written confirmation is given that the Solitaire is out of Irish territorial waters. At the time of going to print yesterday evening (Thursday) she was in her car at Glengad maintaining her protest.

Two fishermen have been re-arrested and energy giant Shell was forced to abandon pipe-laying works as protests continued to escalate over the controversial Corrib gas project.

The father and son, who are members of the Shell to Sea group, were first detained last night on their fishing boats during protests in Broadhaven Bay.

Hours after being released, the men, aged 51 and 23, joined a second stand-off at sea and were again taken into custody.
