Melting Sea Ice And Arctic Drilling: A Risky Combination

Screen Shot 2013-11-01 at 09.31.18Shell, which has spent billions on buying leases in Alaska’s Chukchi and Beaufort seas, announced that the drilling program there has been suspended amid a legal battle with environmentalists over whether Shell’s leases were legally granted by the federal government. “Right now, they don’t have the technology, the wherewithal and the capital to put into that…”

Sea ice melting partly because of human-caused climate change could open previously inaccessible Arctic Ocean waters to expanded oil drilling, but the risks of drilling there will be extremely high.

As sea ice melts in the Arctic, the oil and gas industry has expressed new interest in drilling offshore and is expected to invest roughly $100 billion there by 2023, according to a new paper from the Woodrow Wilson Center, a Washington-based think tank. The paper highlights an agreement between ExxonMobil and Russian oil company Rosneft, which have planned to jointly explore for oil in the Kara Sea off the Arctic coast of Siberia. read more

Shell’s lavish spending on quixotic drilling adventures

Screen Shot 2013-10-16 at 15.38.09Shell’s quest for new reserves has seen it pump billions into money-devouring plays such as its Athabasca Oil Sands Project in northern Alberta and the Kashagan oilfield, a deeply troubled project in Kazakhstan. It’s even tried deep water drilling in the high Arctic. That attempt ended when the stormy waters of the Chukchi Sea crippled its Kulluk drilling platform, forcing the company to pull up stakes. Investors can’t simply count on ever rising oil prices to justify Shell’s lavish spending on quixotic drilling adventures around the world.

Why Turning a Buck Isn’t Easy Anymore for Oil’s Biggest Players

Former Chief Economist, CIBC World Markets

27 Jan 2014

Judging by pump prices, Canadian drivers might think oil companies were rolling in profits that only move higher. Lately, though, the big boys in the global oil industry are finding that earning a buck isn’t as easy as it used to be.

Royal Dutch Shell, for instance, just announced that fourth quarter earnings would fall woefully short of expectations. The Anglo-Dutch energy giant warned its quarterly profits will be down 70 percent from a year earlier. Full-year earnings, meanwhile, are expected to be a little more than half of what they were the previous year. read more

The Wrong Decision for Human Rights

Yesterday the Supreme Court ruled in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell) that Esther Kiobel may not proceed in her case against Shell for aiding and abetting in the torture and murder of her husband. In addition to setting back Esther’s quest for justice, the Court’s decision has two major effects: It limits accountability for gross human rights abuse committed abroad and it gives foreign corporations preferential treatment over domestic businesses.

In 1995, Dr. Barinem Kiobel was kidnapped, tortured, and executed by hanging following a trial before a military tribunal that was internationally denounced and widely condemned as a sham along with eight other people. Dr. Kiobel was a leader of a non-violent organization that protested Shell’s polluting of the land in the Ogoni region of Nigeria. To quash the protest, Shell allegedly sent corporate officers to meet with the Nigerian government and provided funding and training to the Nigerian military for “security operations” that resulted in years of violent abuse, including harassment, beatings, rape, torture and ultimately death. read more

Shell’s Shell Game

According to Shell’s New Lens Scenarios, we’re headed for a carbon-free future, where solar will be the dominant energy source by 2100. The report got almost universally upbeat press, praised in business and even environmental websites. Amory Lovins, Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, endorses Shell’s study: “Shell is the most far-sighted and strategic of the majors, largely because the Scenarios informed the thinking of Shell leadership and many others in the energy ecosystem.” read more

Vince Cable Described As ‘Minister For Shell’ In Letter From Oil Giant

Vince Cable Described As ‘Minister For Shell’ In Letter From Oil Giant

A letter describing Vince Cable as the “contact minister for Shell” has raised fresh questions about the business secretary’s relationship with the oil giant. In the letter to Cable dated 19 March 2012, Malcolm Brinded, the then chief executive of Shell Upstream International, sets out how the company would like the coalition to harden its line against the European Fuel Quality Directive, a policy initiative aimed at reducing emissions from transport fuels. …

Greenpeace vs. Shell: Alaska Judge Restricts Activists From Boarding Offshore Drilling Vessels

AP  |  Posted: 05/30/2012 11:28 am Updated: 05/30/2012 12:48 pm

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A federal judge has made it more difficult for representatives of Greenpeace USA to board Shell Oil’s drilling vessels.

In March, Judge Sharon Gleason in Anchorage ordered the group to stay a kilometer away from Shell Oil’s drilling ships destined for Arctic waters off Alaska’s northern coast. The restrictions applied to U.S. territorial waters up to 12 miles from shore.

On Tuesday, Gleason extended the restrictions to 200 miles offshore. Shell intends to drill 18 miles off the Beaufort Sea coast this summer, and 70 miles off the Chukchi coast. read more

What Does Shell Have in Common With General Ratko Mladic?

That does Royal Dutch Shell have in common with General Ratko Mladic, former commander of the Bosnian Serb army? More than you’d think…

First off, they’ve both appeared in the Hague in the past week. Shell was there Tuesday for its Annual General Meeting with shareholders, and Mladic just days earlier for the opening of his trial before the International Criminal Court.

More importantly, Shell and Mladic are both facing court proceedings for allegations of “aiding and abetting” egregious human rights abuses. Shell is accused of complicity in torture and killings of Nigerian environmentalists in the Kiobel vs. Shell case, which the U.S. Supreme Court will re-hear in the fall, and Mladic is accused of 11 counts of crimes against humanity, including the massacre of more than 7,000 Muslims in Srebrenica. read more

Shell’s Alabama Offshore Drilling Plans Challenged In Court

Shell’s Alabama Offshore Drilling Plans Challenged In Court

By GREG BLUESTEIN 05/ 2/12 12:59 PM ET

ATLANTA — Environmental groups urged an appeals court on Wednesday to block Shell from drilling 10 new deep-water wells off Alabama’s coast, arguing that federal regulators haven’t properly reviewed the risks of undersea drilling in the aftermath of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill.

The coalition of green groups told the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that federal regulators merely “rubber-stamped” Shell’s plans to drill the wells in the same canyon where the blowout of BP’s Macondo well triggered an explosion that killed 11 rig workers and unleashed a gusher that spewed more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf. Netherlands-based Shell is a subsidiary of UK-based Royal Dutch Shell PLC. read more

Shell Supports Iran’s Murderous Mullahs. Should We Be Supporting Shell?

Posted: 04/ 2/2012 5:16 am

The callous greed in the oil patch seems to know no limits. Here we have a company, Royal Dutch Shell, bursting with earnings, at the apogee of its yearly returns, going after the last dollar or Euro to make things fatter still. This to the cold dismissal of the brave Iranians who rose en-masse in 2009 to rally for free elections only to be put down brutally by the Mullah’s goon squads financed in large measure by the plenitude of oil revenues streaming from Iran’s export oil loadings. The world was outraged, but helplessly stood by as the slaughter continued. From far and wide came calls to impose sanctions on Iran and to impose embargoes on Iran’s products. One would have thought any responsible organization would have desisted its activities with what had now evolved into a murderous regime. read more

Shell’s Lawsuit Against Environmental Organizations Courts Disaster

…Shell also settled a case charging them with collaborating with the Niger military to kill environmental activists who led the protests.

Shell is suing 12 environmental organizations to preempt legal challenges to exploration in the Arctic Ocean. The environmental groups include, among others, the Center for Biological Diversity, the National Audubon Society, Oceana (full disclosure: Oceana is a source for CSRHub ratings) and the Sierra Club. Crazy isn’t it, Shell, a $378 billion company, attacking the National Audubon Society? It’s a bully image that can only hurt, and Shell should know better because it’s happened to them over and over again. read more
