Fuel Trucks Pick Up Last Loads
Susan Daker reports from Houston.
Fuel tank drivers picked up their last loads Friday afternoon and made their way to Shell-branded gasoline stations in the Houston area as Hurricane Ike neared the Texas coast.
Many service stations around the city already have plastic covering their pumps. In the past 36 hours, more than six million gallons of gasoline has been delivered to Shell stations, Royal Dutch Shell said in a statement. Gasoline terminals in Beaumont, Pasadena and north Houston have been shut-in but have enough gasoline to supply stations once the weather clears, Shell said. Some wholesalers have preloaded tankers with fuel so they are ready to make deliveries as soon as possible, Shell said. In addition, Shell said generators are on hand to be sent to strategic stations so gasoline can still be sold even if the power is out.

Royal Dutch Shell said Friday evening it has delivered more than 6 million gallons of fuel to Shell-branded stations in Houston, Victoria, Pasadena, Galveston, Beaumont and Port Arthur in the past 36 hours. The deliveries amounted to more than double the daily averages in some areas, Shell said.

Emergency alert for Texas as Hurricane Ike heads for state
Miami President Bush declared an emergency in Texas as Hurricane Ike headed towards the state. Evacuations were started on the coast and the President ordered federal aid to help local efforts to prepare for the hurricane, which killed 100 people in the Carribean. It is expected to reach Texas on Saturday.
Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, evacuated employees from its offshore installations yesterday when the hurricane hit the Gulf of Mexico, where many oil refineries are based.
The US will provide $10 million (£5.7 million) in aid to help Haiti to recover from the recent storms, a spokesman for the White House said. (AFP)

With Hurricane Ike on the horizon, energy companies in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are bringing employees onshore again and preparing to halt production just days after they began restaffing following Hurricane Gustav.
Crude-oil and natural-gas producers were in the middle of restoring operations after Gustav, which forced the shut-in of virtually all output before the hurricane made landfall Sept. 1 just southwest of New Orleans.
Oil-output volumes stayed flat on Monday compared with the previous day, with about 20% of U.S. Gulf output restored, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service. Gas output continued growing, though, with 36% of capacity back on line.
Hurricane Ike adds to oil chaos
Royal Dutch Shell yesterday said it had evacuated about 150 people from its offshore facilities, leaving a further 500 personnel in place: "We will continue to bring personnel back to shore, with the intention of completing a full evacuation of personnel from Shell-operated facilities on Wednesday, in advance of Ike.
Energy Sector Hums Again
Royal Dutch Shell PLC, operator of the Gulf's biggest platform in terms of production, over the weekend said it wouldn't redeploy all personnel evacuated from offshore facilities "because of the possibility that Hurricane Ike might enter the [Gulf of Mexico] next week and require another evacuation."
