Shell has admitted that there are hundreds of tonnes of additional oil in the pipeline that has been leaking for a week in the North Sea.

The estimate was revealed as Shell continues to try to stem the flow on the seabed near the Gannet Alpha platform, about 112 miles east of Aberdeen.

Since the leak started last Wednesday, more than 200 tonnes of oil has spilled into the North Sea, making it the worst single leak in the region for more than a decade.

The initial large leak was stopped the following day, but it later emerged that a smaller flow from the same source had been detected. read more

Anger as Shell fails to answer questions about spillage

Shell’s modus operandi – of giving out information only on what appears to be a need-to-know basis – is not good enough. The public needs to know, and has a right to know.

Published Date: 16 August 2011 By Jenny Fyall Environment Correspondent
ENERGY giant Shell is facing mounting criticism over its secrecy about an oil leak in the North Sea, as the spill was revealed to be twice as large as previously thought. Five days after the leak from the Gannet Alpha rig was spotted about 112 miles east of Aberdeen, Shell finally responded to pressure to reveal the volumes of oil involved.

It confirmed 216 tonnes had spread into the sea – the equivalent of 1,300 barrels of oil. The Scottish Government said at the weekend it involved only about 100 tonnes.

However, a raft of questions today remain unanswered, including how the leak started, why Shell has not yet been able to stop the flow of oil, where exactly the spill is in the North Sea, and whether any seabirds or other wildlife are caught up in it.

Politicians and environment groups have increased their calls for Shell to be more open about the leak. Government figures show it is four times the entire quantity of oil discharged into the North Sea in 2009, and by far the largest spill in UK waters for more than a decade. read more

OGONI ACTIVISTS ACCUSE SHELL OF ‘ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM’

Extracts from a Press Statement issued by the National Union of Ogoni Students, USA.

On August 04, 2011 the world had a preview of the report of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) sent to the Nigerian government after 14 months of studying the impact of Shell Oil Company’s operations in Ogoni.

The report was astonishing and confirmed the toxicology of the Ogoni environment as a result of oil exploration, pollution, spillages and negligence. The report also collaborated on genocidal claim by Ogoni people as they experience slow death resulting from oil agents like benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene (BTEX), mercury, PAHs, VOC, polluted reactive gases, and metals. read more

Goi is now a dead village. The two fish ponds, bakery and chicken farm that used to be the pride and joy of its chief deacon, Barrisa Tete Dooh, lie abandoned, covered in a thick black layer. The village’s fishing creek is contaminated; the school has been looted; the mangrove forests are coated in bitumen and everyone has left, refugees from a place blighted by the exploitation of the region’s most valuable asset: crude oil. read more

Shell Defends Self Over Oil Pollution in Ogoniland

By  Chuks Okocha  and Omon-Julius Onabu

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria has absolved itself of any wrongdoing in respect of the widely reported 2008 oil spills in Ogoni communities in the Niger-Delta.

Apparently reacting to the recent report by the United Nations Environmental Programme on the pollution of Ogoniland, which indicted Shell, SPDC Managing Director, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, said “oil spills in the Niger-Delta are a tragedy,” adding, also, that the company “takes them very seriously”. read more

MOSOP challenges integrity of UNEP Report

Press Statement issued by Dr. Goodluck Diigbo MOSOP President/Spokesman

AUGUST 5, 2011

At a MOSOP Emergency General Meeting in Bori, headquarters of Ogoniland on August 4, 2011, MOSOP welcomes the increased awareness the UNEP report on Ogoniland is likely to create about the continued threat of possible extinction to the Ogoni people arising from oil operations in the past 55 years. However, MOSOP resolves to dispute the integrity of the UNEP Report on Ogoniland, which was paid for with $9.5 million by the polluters, including Royal-Dutch/Shell.

MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, says MOSOP is challenging the integrity of the report, recalling an earlier confession by UNEP team leader Mike Cowing that the report has been informed by data and information solely supplied by Shell and the government, without actual study on the ground. The purported UNEP meeting with 23,000 Ogonis is only on paper, and there is no evidence to prove who attended, what review was done, agreements reached, if any and Ogonis who signed such agreements as proof of public participation as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment Study, EIAS due process. read more

Benzene Contamination Fears in Roxana Illinois

Maria Keena June 22, 2011 1:54 AM

ROXANA, IL (KMOX) – Twenty-five years later, the Village of Roxana Illinois is being tested for known Benzene contamination. In 19-86 nearly nine-thousand gallons of Benzene leaked into the ground from a Shell Refinery pipeline. Connoco Phillips now runs the refinery, but Shell is still assuming the responsibility.

Last night,  dozens of residents heard from the Illinois E-P-A and Department of Public Health about the contaminated areas. Property owner and life long resident Dale Carroll says over a year ago, test wells were being drilled around Roxana and it was all very hush, hush. But Carroll is not surprised. In 1986, he owned a building right where the Benzene spill happened and it was not until 19-99 that the City of Roxana terminated Carroll’s lease and bought him out. Since then, the building has been vacant. read more

The gas flares of Nigeria

Below the surface, crude oil is often found mixed with natural gas. The natural gas must be separated from the oil during extraction. Technically the gas can easily be captured and utilized. In Nigeria, however, the associated gas is primitively flared in the open air. Rushing for oil exports in the 1960s and 1970s, Shell and the Nigerian government only built oil pipelines. They didn’t care about infrastructure to utilize the valuable natural gas: just burn it. There are currently approximately 100 continuously burning gas flares in the Niger Delta and just offshore, some of which have been burning since the early 1960s. read more

PART ONE

Shell in Nigeria

In oil production, Nigeria is the most important country for Shell. During the period 2006-2010, Nigeria accounted for about 16% of Shell’s worldwide production of oil and liquid natural gas. During the year 2009, production falls due to disrupting activities by militant groups in the Niger Delta reached their peak for the time being. During the year 2010, production climbed back again, with Nigeria accounting for almost 19% of Shell’s worldwide production of oil and liquid natural gas. read more

Fighting Shell Oil, Toxic Waste, Texan Cleans Town, Wins Goldman $150,000

By Mike Di Paola – May 9, 2011 5:01 AM GMT+0100

When Hilton Kelley takes me to see the Port Arthur, Texas, housing project where he was born, it isn’t to complain about the usual eyesores. There’s no graffiti, no broken windows, no trash on the ground.

“People care about the neighborhood,” Kelley says.

The problem is next-door. Adjacent to the property are oil and gas refineries, petrochemical plants and toxic-waste incinerators. Companies such as Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., Shell Oil Co. and Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) have been part of the Port Arthur skyline for decades. read more

Shell Reports ‘Unplanned’ Flaring At Martinez Refinery

By John Donovan

According to  an article published on 25 February 2011 by The Wall Street Journal, Royal Dutch Shell Plc has recently reported “unplanned” flaring at its Martinez refinery in California.

Shell has a track record of illegal emissions at the refinery, paying fines totaling over $25 million since 1989.

On 1 December 1989, The New York Times reported that Shell Oil Company had agreed to pay $19.75 million “for spilling more than 400,000 gallons of crude oil into San Francisco Bay”. Shell said that it had “spent an additional $14 million in cleaning up the spill, when oil flowed from a pipe at its Martinez refinery in April 1988”. Oil leaked out from a 12.5-million-gallon storage tank at the manufacturing complex 40 miles northeast of San Francisco. The Government said that several Federal regulations were broken. According to the article at least 250 birds and 50 other animals were found dead and a valuable wildlife habitat was ruined and tidal marshlands would take 10 years to recover. read more
