Shell’s accountants predict the Dutch giant will never pay Australia for gas extracted at the Gorgon and Prelude LNG projects that it can sell for up to about $4 billion a year. Peter Milne from independent energy and climate news site Boiling Cold has the story.

Dutch giant Shell forecasts it will never pay Australia for oil and gas extracted for the Gorgon and Prelude LNG projects that it can sell for up to almost $4 billion a year. read more

LNG production at Shell’s Prelude gas processing plant in Western Australia restarts following 11-month closure

LNG production at Shell’s Prelude gas processing plant in Western Australia restarts following 11-month closure

ABC KimberleyBy Ben Collins: 23 Jan 2021 “As for making money from this project, that’s extremely unlikely because the cost overruns and completion delays are in the horrendous category,”…

Key points:

  • The facility was shutdown for 11 months after electrical and safety problems
  • Some analysts hold concerns about the facility’s economic and environmental performance
  • Shell has never revealed the cost of constructing Prelude

Liquified natural gas (LNG) production has restarted this month on the world’s largest floating object, Shell’s half-kilometre long Prelude gas processing facility.

The restart is much-needed good news after an 11-month shutdown following a technical issue only described as an “electrical trip” by Shell, and three incidents that the offshore energy regulator NOPSEMA described as “dangerous occurrences”. read more

Shell resumes gas shipments from world’s largest floating structure

The restart of the huge Prelude facility — which at 488 metres is longer than four football fields — is a welcome boost for Shell as it coincides with a record surge in LNG prices fuelled by a cold snap in Asia. But construction challenges, cost overruns and technical problems with Prelude, as well as challenging market conditions, have prompted Shell and other producers to cancel other FLNG projects. “Prelude has been a ‘white elephant’ — we always felt it was a technology looking for a solution rather than the other way round,” said Neil Beveridge, an analyst at Bernstein. read more

Shell to write down assets again, taking cuts to more than $22 billion

In October, Shell, the world’s biggest LNG trader, wrote down the value of its LNG portfolio by just under $1 billion, focusing on its flagship Prelude project in Australia.

LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell on Monday said it will write down the value of oil and gas assets by $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion following a string of impairments this year as it adjusts to a weaker outlook. read more

Australia’s LNG exports at nine-month high

Australia’s LNG exports at nine-month high

Published date: 03 December 2020

…the Shell-operated…Prelude floating LNG venture remaining off line. The plant offshore Western Australia is unlikely to restart before next year, and has been off line since February.

Australia’s LNG exports rose to a nine-month high of 7.04mn t in October, driven by record shipments from the Queensland port of Gladstone.

Total LNG shipments increased from 6.22mn t in September when the LNG plants at Gladstone were undertaking significant maintenance. The increase to 7.04mn t, which is just below the record monthly high of 7.22mn t set in January, comes despite the Shell-operated 3.6mn t/yr Prelude floating LNG venture remaining off line. XR activists protest Prelude “death machine”

The $12 billion vessel started up production in July last year, only to be shut in in February as it was plagued with technical problems and has been in lighthouse mode ever since, with frequent clashes between unions, Shell management and contractors like Sodexo about conditions on the vessel. Last week the company posted an impairment post-tax charge of A$924 million…

A GROUP of Extinction Rebellion protestors descended on Shell’s Perth headquarters over the weekend, defacing the entrance and writing chalk on the pavement in protest of Shell’s Prelude FLNG vessel, describing it as a “death machine”.

Police were called to the scene by Shell security, however no arrests or move on notices were made and by Monday morning all evidence of the protest had been removed. read more

Shell’s Prelude FLNG becomes a big headache!

Shell’s Prelude FLNG becomes a big headache!

By Bill Campbell

According to a recent article in Forbes “the biggest vessel in the world costing todate between 12 and 17 billion US may have also turned into Shell’s biggest blooper.”

It’s all been Technically very challenging as Shell has attempted to squeeze a complex LNG plant into a relatively small space Forbes say. (this website has covered this as a fundamental concern a number of times) – (1)

Goodman Sachs are also of the opinion that when eventually fully operational Prelude, the worlds most expensive LNG project, will only break even in current market conditions at around 20 dollars per a thousand cubic feet. read more

Coronavirus Further Complicates Shell’s Giant Floating Gas Project

Coronavirus Further Complicates Shell’s Giant Floating Gas Project

The $15 billion Prelude vessel highlights how Covid-19 is hindering operations and challenging the economics of energy megaprojects

By Sarah McFarlane:

Royal Dutch Shell PLC spent billions of dollars developing one of the world’s most challenging energy projects, a floating gas terminal five football fields long. The coronavirus pandemic is posing a new problem: How to get workers to safely start it back up.

After years of delays, cost overruns, technical problems and safety concerns, Shell began exporting natural gas from the enormous vessel, known as Prelude, last year off the coast of Australia. But production was halted in February because of an electrical fault. Efforts to restart are now being slowed by social-distancing requirements, the company said. read more

Leaked information outlines union plans to conduct a ‘protected action’ strike aboard Shell’s Prelude floating LNG vessel offshore Western Australia, as well as other offshore facilities.

Members of the two unions voted unanimously in taking action over an impasse on working arrangements and a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement with contractor Sodexo.

Sodexo provides catering, cooking and cleaning staff to oil and gas facilities including Shell’s Prelude FLNG project, and Inpex’s offshore facilities.  read more

Alarm Bells Ring Again About Shell Prelude Safety Issues

By John Donovan

For several years, retired Royal Dutch Shell experts, including Bill Campbell, have rung alarm bells about safety issues in relation to Shell’s Prelude FLNG project. See Royal Dutch Shell Prelude to disaster

We have also published related information supplied to us by an insider. The person in question has been intimately involved in the project at a high level. He is deeply concerned that warnings issued to Shell (and other parties) have been ignored and that financial considerations are taking priority over safety issues. The whistleblower supplied me with internal information and photographic material.

Bill Campbell made a chilling assessment: “The revolutionary concept of offshore LNG installations (FLNG) is said to have economic and environmental advantages. A distinct disadvantage however is that the risks to health and safety of persons employed offshore on the LNG FPSO’s, such as Prelude, will be higher, when compared to onshore LNG plants of similar capacity, specifically the potential for loss of life; …loss of containment of hydrocarbons is likely to occur on Prelude during its operational life, either through flaws in the design, human error or failure to inspect and maintain. It’s almost inevitable.  It’s only to be hoped that the consequences of these losses never reach their full potential.”  read more
