Huge public pressure forced Shell to lift an injunction

FROM OUR SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE OCTOBER 2005

The Guardian (UK): Don’t be defeatist: the power of protest is alive and well

“…in Ireland last week huge public pressure forced Shell to lift an injunction which had seen five anti-pipeline farmers jailed for 94 days.”

Friday 7 October 2005

The government cannot stifle dissent, say Helen Steel and Dave Morris

George Monbiot looked at some of the wide range of repressive measures increasingly being used to undermine the public’s right to protest (Protest is criminalised and the huffers and puffers say nothing, October 4). The government is exploiting every opportunity to extend its powers over us all. Its aim is to try to protect the status quo so that those who have wealth and power can continue to dominate our world, untroubled by anyone fighting back. read more

Shell machine remains stuck in Mayo

COMMENT FROM A REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR:

SHELL MACHINE REMAINS STUCK IN MAYO…

The question surely is whether the Mayo is (S)Hellman’s, and whether Shell has enough demulsifier to disperse it…

(Oil mixed with water forms an emulsion which is physically and chemically similar to mayonnaise – think of the off-white globules that are formed by oil slicks)

Efforts to move a jack-knifed 160-ton truck carrying machinery for a controversial gas project are farcical, campaigners have claimed.

As the 40m vehicle continues to block a road in Co Mayo, protesters against Shell’s Corrib scheme said it will take a miracle to move it.

One of the Rossport Five, Willie Corduff, was arrested earlier today during protests over traffic disruption since the truck got stuck near the Glenamoy Bridge in Erris yesterday morning.

Mr Corduff was one of five men who spent 94 days in jail in 2005 after refusing to agree not to protest against the project. read more

The Guardian: Shell meets its match in the Rossport Five

FROM OUR JULY 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE…

The Guardian: Shell meets its match in the Rossport Five

“Suddenly, the issue became one of the biggest news stories of the year and, as the Irish Examiner called it, “a major public relations disaster for the Shell corporation”: “The “Rossport Five” were jailed at the specific request of the company, which had obtained compulsory purchase orders for the land in question – the first time in Irish history that such an order was granted to a private company. The five will remain in jail until they undertake not to obstruct the company.”: “Shell officials misjudged the situation…”: “July has seen huge rallies in support of the men in Co Mayo and in Dublin, the picketing of Shell garages nationwide, and round-the-clock blockades of the refinery construction site.”

Friday July 29, 2005

The residents of the tiny village of Rossport, in the north-west corner of County Mayo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, have been up in arms for almost five years now. They have spent that time campaigning against a proposal by the petroleum giant Shell to lay a pipeline through their community to carry untreated gas from beneath the sea to a refinery 5.5 miles inland. Their cause secured little or no coverage in the national press until, at the end of June, five of them were jailed for refusing Shell access to their land to begin work on the pipeline. read more

Irish Times: Controversy over Mayo gas pipeline

“This giveaway agreement was presided over by a government led by CJ Haughey, and the terms were arranged by the then Minister who dealt with such affairs, Ray Burke. This man has since been investigated and found to have engaged in a mass of corrupt and illegal dealings, and has served a jail term.”

LETTERS

Madam, – The continuing and unhappy imprisonment of a group of protesters from Co Mayo who seek to have Shell prevented from high-pressure gas pipeline construction draws attention to another matter of enormous importance to the people and economy of this island.

I refer to the agreement, drawn up years back, between the then Haughey government and international oil companies, regulating the sale of prospecting rights, control, development and ensuing profits of the oil and gas resources off our western coast. read more

VICTORY; Shell Halts Pipeline As Minister Orders Safety Review

FROM OUR JULY 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE…

Daily Mirror (UK): VICTORY; Shell Halts Pipeline As Minister Orders Safety Review

“The energy giant has been forced by the Government to back down in the row over the Corrib gas pipeline that saw five farmers jailed for the past two weeks.”

Thursday 14 July 2005

SHELL last night suspended all work on a controversial pipeline amid fears it may be risking the lives of the local community.

The energy giant has been forced by the Government to back down in the row over the Corrib gas pipeline that saw five farmers jailed for the past two weeks.

The Mayo Five – Philip McGrath, Willie Corduff, Vincent McGrath, Brendan Philbin and Micheal O’Seighin – were imprisoned for contempt of court.

They ignored a High Court ruling ordering them not to block the construction of the pipeline on their land. read more

Shell puts extra €90m into Irish subsidiary

The Irish Times – Monday, January 23, 2012

GORDON DEEGAN

OIL AND GAS multinational Shell has injected €90 million into its Irish subsidiary to deal with the spiralling costs of the Corrib gas field project.

Documents filed with the Companies’ Registration Office show that the global group has pumped the extra money into Shell Ireland.

The Irish company confirmed yesterday that the 5km onshore gas pipeline to bring gas from the offshore Corrib field to the market will not be complete until the second half of 2014.

The Corrib gas partners, Shell, Statoil and Canadian-owned Vermillion are now nine years behind the initial target to start generating revenues from the field. read more

Shell censorship of free speech on the Internet

“I also have doubts about the wisdom of allying yourself so closely and obviously to the Donovans, who seem to have raised Shell-baiting to such a level of vituperation (cleverly mixed with plenty of apparent balance and reasonableness) that it is difficult to see how either side can compromise without losing an unacceptable amount of face (Shell) or a rich and ongoing stream of damages (the Donovans).”

Wow, I’ve just read the posting below about the 2005 Accountability Rating – the article by Alfred Donovan- the owner of the worlds self proclaimed ultimate gripe site, ShellNews.net. I am baffled why Shell allows him to comprehensively tear Shell management to pieces on countless postings all over the Internet, including Shell’s own website – while I am not allowed the freedom to make criticism of Shell, my former employer of 29 years.

There has not been a peep from the Shell webmaster on this or any other issue for some time as fellow contributors have noticed. We seem to be on our own here guys! read more

Gas pipeline safety defended

The hearing is one of the last stages in the series of statutory approvals sought for the project. Shell EP Ireland is currently preparing to proceed with laying the offshore pipeline in advance of onshore approval, but has not secured agreement with fishermen who staged a peaceful protest at Ballyglass pier last night.

Environmental Showdown on the Irish Coast

Along with making martyrs of five soft-spoken family farmers, the imprisonments took the mask off of Shell's already clumsy public relations effort. "If we had been living in a country that allowed hanging, would Shell have asked for them to be hanged?" asks the wife of one of the Rossport 5. It's a question that many here have pondered as clashes with police have grown increasingly violent.

Briefing from the Rossport Solidarity Camp on the Shell Corrib Pipeline battle

Today, at the end of the traditional Good Friday walk around 30 people entered Shell’s land to walk down to remove the net. We were met by around 40 security. We attempted to remove the net and the security attempted to stop us... During the struggle, a pair of scissors was produced and the net was cut in two. After, we all left together; there were no arrests.

Corrib talks collapse over basic ‘disagreement’

The discussions were the first between Rossport Five members and Shell since the five were jailed for 94 days in 2005. Their imprisonment arose from their opposition to the routing of the high-pressure Corrib gas onshore pipeline.

Shell gas protest costs €11m in garda overtime

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern is now considering asking Shell to help foot the €11m bill, which could see a bitter legal wrangle take place -- the company has a right to a reasonable expectation of a safe and secure working environment for its employees in Mayo.

Message from the Rossport Solidarity Camp: Shell Corrib Gas Project in Ireland: ‘More jailings ahead…

Shell are also applying for Compulsory Acquisition Orders (which led to the jailing of the Rossport Five back in June 2005). I have no doubt that this will lead to serious confrontation on the ground with plenty of folk living locally saying they are prepared to go to jail.

Irish Independent: Shell game continues

Thursday Aug 04, 2005

Sir – Now that the Minister has given permission for the laying of the offshore pipeline to Shell, perhaps matters have crystalised a little and it is time to take stock. This was always going to happen as, rightly or wrongly, this matter was decided a long time ago. The incarceration of the Rossport Five continues with the whole country now going on holiday, and Shell are beginning to lay off workers – a local TD involved says it does not matter much as they are not local! read more

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Wednesday 3 August 2005

The decision by the Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey, to allow Shell Ireland to commence work on the 75km pipeline, part of its development of the Corrib gasfield, will hardly do anything to defuse the ill-feeling which the company has caused locally.

It also seems somewhat ambiguous for him to order the dismantling of a section of onshore pipeline for which approval had not been given, while giving the go-ahead for the offshore section, as he did yesterday.

Local objectors have expressed their dismay at the minister’s rather belated display of authority on foot of the company’s breach in relation to the onshore pipeline. Shell E&P Ireland took it for granted that they could do undertake the work with impunity and went ahead without permission. read more

Irish Times: Shell to decide shortly when it will lay offshore pipeline

“The world’s largest pipelaying vessel, the 285m (935ft) Solitaire, has been booked for August 15th but the company is expected to meet stiff resistance from supporters of the five men if the ship enters Mayo waters.”

Wednesday 3 August 2005

Shell E&P Ireland is expected to decide “shortly” when it will start laying the high-pressure offshore gas pipeline to the Corrib gas field, after receiving permission yesterday from the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey to start the work, writes Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent.

The latest consent, which was criticised yesterday by supporters of the five Mayo men still in Cloverhill Prison, represents a setback for the campaign to have an offshore terminal built at sea. read more
