Shell storm: Cooperative Asset Management says Shell ignored its own rules on payouts

One of the City’s most influential institutional investors is leading a rebellion over fat cat bonuses at Royal Dutch Shell and Next.

Co-operative Asset Management is so unhappy it has broken the Square Mile’s code of silence to publicly rebuke Shell.

It plans to try to block the re-election of remuneration committee member-Lord Kerr, to highlight the Anglo-Dutch oil giant’s intransigence over pay.

The Co-op’s corporate governance expert Abigail Herron said: ‘It is now time for members of the remuneration committee to be called to account.’ read more

A word in your Shell-like about those bonuses

What were they thinking of? Have they been on another planet for the past few years? Have they not picked up the slightest hint of public and shareholder unease at “rewards for failure” and a culture of executive remuneration that seems to amount to “heads you win, tails you, er, also win”?

Shell faces revolt by its key shareholders

This is the second year in a row that the remuneration committee has used its discretion to reward the executives for below-average returns to shareholders, which raises serious questions about whose interests they are looking after.”

Shell faces bonus rebellion

The groups were said to believe that Shell had failed to meet its set targets, by being ranked fourth among its peer group of international oil companies. Shell argues it only just came fourth, the paper said.

Iran Pars gas likely for home use, not LNG – Shell

Gas to be produced from an Iranian field which Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L: Quote,Profile, Research) planned to develop before pulling out under U.S. pressure will likely be retained for domestic use, the oil major said on Tuesday. Where to hold ’em

Financial Times: Where to hold ’em

Think of it as a very big wedding. If you delayed the big day by two months, at short notice, you wouldn’t be surprised if the reception venue was already booked for the new date.

So there’s nothing particularly surprising about Shell Transport and Trading’s decision to hire ExCel, the conference centre in London’s docklands, for its rescheduled annual meeting on June 28.

Neither the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, Shell’s usual venue, nor any other adequate hall closer to central London was available. In spite of ExCel’s much larger capacity, the AGM will not take up more room than usual. read more

Shell hole

Financial Times: Observer: Shell hole

June 16, 2004

Shareholders of the UK arm of Royal Dutch/Shell who want to inspect the new faces at the top will have to journey to London’s eastern docklands for its postponed annual meeting on June 28.

Observer is assured this is not a case of the company hiding itself away. Shell’s usual venue opposite parliament was not available, nor was any other 1,000-seat hall closer to central London.

Shell is not the only newsmaking UK company forced to seek a new venue. Marks and Spencer, the retailer that is suddenly the object of much bid attention, has told shareholders it plans to hold its 2005 and 2006 annual meetings in Birmingham, more than 100 miles north of London. London’s Royal Festival Hall, its usual hangout, is to be refurbished. read more
