Ice could delays Shell’s work in Alaska

Published: June 15, 2012 at 6:35 AM

WASHINGTON, June 15 (UPI) — Drilling operations in the arctic waters off the coast of Alaska might be scaled back if there is late ice cover in the region this summer, Shell said.

Shell aims to launch a drilling campaign in the coming months in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off the Alaskan coast.

Shell President Marvin Odum told the Platts news service the program might get scaled back from five exploratory wells to three if there is late ice cover in the region.

“It’s a little ironic, isn’t it, that this is the year it looks like we’ll finally move forward with the drilling process and what we find through our analysis is there’s more ice in the Arctic this year than there has been in the last decade,” he said. read more

Shell hails North American gas potential

The U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets could help China meet its growing energy demand in a clean and sustainable fashion, a Shell executive said.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) — The U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets could help China meet its growing energy demand in a clean and sustainable fashion, a Shell executive said.

Marvin Odum, upstream director for American operations at Royal Dutch Shell, speaking at the spring policy forum for the Canadian American Business Council, said U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets were ripe for exports.

“Alberta and British Columbia alone are probably sitting on more than 200 trillion cubic feet of competitive natural gas,” he said in his address. “Natural gas production from tight shale and sandstone in the U.S. and Canada nearly doubled between 2005 and 2010.” read more

Shell starts repair work in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria, May 17 (UPI) — A Shell subsidiary in Nigeria announced it started repairs on a crude oil pipeline in the country following an early May closure and force majeure declaration.

Shell declared force majeure on Bonny Light crude, the Nigerian blend, as of May 4.

“The action is due to production deferment caused by incessant crude theft and illegal bunkering on Nembe Creek Trunkline,” the company said in a statement.

The shutdown means 60,000 barrels of oil per day is deferred while repairs take place. read more

Shell to pay $25M to Nigerian communities

Published: March. 20, 2012 at 10:39 PM

OSHODI, Nigeria, March 20 (UPI) — Shell Petroleum Development Co. was ordered by a Nigerian court to pay more than $25 million to five communities in Imo state for a 1997 oil spill.

The communities sued Shell for compensation for immediate direct losses to their means of livelihood caused by the oil spill, The Guardian in Oshodi, Nigeria, reported Tuesday.

In 1997, a Shell pipeline ruptured along the Egbema-Assa delivery line and a large volume of crude oil became trapped underground until the soil became saturated with water, causing the oil to travel to the surface. The oil damaged swamps, streams and forests of the Umudike, Alimiri Umudike, Ekpe Agah, Ukpazizi Ekpe Mbede and Etekuru communities. read more

Shell finds oil in deep U.S. waters

HOUSTON, Feb. 22 (UPI) — Shell announced that it encountered oil at its Appomattox discovery in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico in the Mississippi Canyon block.

Shell said it encountered roughly 150 feet of oil pay in an appraisal well in the Mississippi Canyon block in about 7,257 feet of water.

“We are pleased with the continued success at our Appomattox prospect and this well supports our continuing appraisal efforts to progress this to a new hub class development,” David Lawrence, an executive vice president of exploration at Shell, said in a statement. read more

Shell close to working in arctic waters

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 17 (UPI) — Shell sees a “clear path” to getting approval to drill in arctic waters off the coast of Alaska as early as July, an executive said.

Warming trends have resulted in less sea ice in arctic waters and exposed areas believed to hold vast reserves of oil and natural gas.

Shell Alaska President Pete Slaiby told the Platts news service that the company was close to getting approved to work on the outer continental shelf in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. read more

Shell expands Canadian oil sands operation

Published: May 5, 2011 at 8:32 AM

CALGARY, Alberta, May 5 (UPI) — The expansion of a production facility processing Canadian oil sands goes a long way toward addressing global energy concerns, Shell said.

Shell announced that it started production at its Scotford expansion project that increased the capacity in the region from 100,000 barrels per day to 255,000 bpd of heavy oil from Athabasca oil sands in Canada.

“This start-up is an important milestone for our heavy oil business,” Marvin Odum, Shell Upstream Americas director, said in a statement. “And it adds new capacity from an important source of oil in a world requiring more secure energy.” read more

Shell considers third train at Sakhalin-2

UPI Energy Watch: Shell considers third train at Sakhalin-2

“A huge and diverse array of technical and environmental challenges have surrounded the project, including the need to reroute offshore pipelines to bypass feeding grounds for an endangered species of whale. In July, the Sakhalin Energy partners announced a massive revision to the project budget — to $20 billion from $10 billion — and a delay to first LNG deliveries.”

Shell and Japanese partners Mitsui and Mitsubishi are evaluating options for a third train at their Sakhalin-2 LNG development on Russia’s Pacific Shelf.

Gas to supply a third train could come from a variety of sources, David Greer, deputy chief executive of Sakhalin Energy, the project operating company, said last Thursday during a presentation to an industry gathering in Scotland.

“The issue is getting the additional gas that would be required,” Greer said. “We are looking at deeper prospects in (the) Lunskoye (gas field). We have some space for a third train. It will be a question of earmarking the most appropriate reserves.” But a third train “wouldn’t be available much before 2012,” he said. read more
