Ireland On-Line: More than 1,000 turn out for ‘Rossport Five’ demonstration

Posted Sunday 14 August 2005

Supporters of the “Rossport Five” took their case to Galway this weekend where more than a thousand people attended a rally in the city centre.

The campaigners have been demanding that the Shell oil company abandons its plans to build a gas pipeline in their land.

The five Mayo men have now spent six weeks in jail for opposing the project.

Green Party councillor Niall O’Brolchain said that the men are prepared to stay there as long as it takes to prove the oil giant’s plans are not safe. read more

“Here is an interesting decision: For years, Alfred Donovan has published news and reports on the firm Shell.”

Here is an interesting decision: For years, Alfred Donovan has published news and reports on the firm Shell.

He has a website, which domain names are royaldutchshellgroup.com, royaldutchshellplc.com and tellshell.org.

In the case brought by Shell Petroleum, the Panel, as it put it, had

to “balance the Respondent’s “fair use” right to express opinions and provide information about the Complainant against the possible confusion of Internet users who reach the Respondent’s website (via any of his domain names) thinking they are accessing a site operated by or on behalf of the Complainant, an impression then dispelled by the disclaimer visible at the top of the first page of the site, which includes a link to the Complainant’s site.” read more

Secret Censorship on Royal Dutch Shell “Tell Shell” Internet Forum By John Donovan “Tell Shell” is a discussion forum buried deep within the www.shell.com website which supposedly provides a facility for site visitors to openly express their views about Royal Dutch Shell and its business operations.

Printed below is a description of the “Tell Shell” facility by Shell International Petroleum Company Limited as the Complainant in proceedings filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation in May 2005. The proceedings were in respect of the domain name: “TellShell.Org” (set up almost a year ago as an alternative to the official facility.) read more

The Sunday Telegraph: The great cash gusher

“Thanks to crude prices that have averaged more than $40 a barrel over the past 20 months and which last week broke through the $67 a barrel barrier in New York, the oil giants are drowning in cash.”: “BP, ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell have given a new meaning to the concept of “record profits”.: “The Treasury declined to rule out a windfall tax. “The Government is committed to the delivery of a tax regime for the North Sea which promises investment and takes a fair share of revenue derived from a national resource. All taxes are kept under review on a budget by budget basis,” it said.”

Lord Browne had just one word for it. “Staggering” was how the head of BP, the oil giant, described his company’s performance earlier this year.

It is not often that chief executives, especially ones as heavyweight as Lord Browne, are quite so effusive about their company’s performance – in this case, BP’s generation of cash – but he was stating the obvious. Thanks to crude prices that have averaged more than $40 a barrel over the past 20 months and which last week broke through the $67 a barrel barrier in New York, the oil giants are drowning in cash. read more

THE SUNDAY BUSINESS POST (IRELAND) Shell considers public discussions

Sunday 14 August 2005

By Niamh Connolly

Oil company Shell is asking the public for written submissions with their views on the controversial Corrib gas terminal in Mayo.

The company is also considering more direct discussions with the public through a series of public meetings. It has already held meetings with third parties such as the Chambers of Commerce and Mayo County Council.

The company secured a significant victory last Friday when Mayo County Council voted against a motion calling for the gas pipeline to be moved offshore, following legal advice that the council would be exposed to litigation. read more
