Shell, in a move that might make Scrooge McDuck blush, announced record-breaking profits of over $32 billion for the first three quarters of 2022. Over in Rhode Island, the courtroom’s getting hotter than a summer day in the Sahara, and Shell Oil is the star of the show. In a dazzling performance of corporate amnesia, Shell’s lawyers are shrugging off basic questions about the company’s involvement in its terminal at the Port of Providence. It’s like they’ve suddenly forgotten who’s in charge of not turning the area into an environmental disaster zone.

The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), not to be outdone by Shell’s memory loss, filed a lawsuit back in 2017. They’re accusing Shell of basically rolling out the red carpet for flooding and other climate change-related party crashers at its petroleum storage terminal. CLF isn’t new to this rodeo; they’ve been roping in big oil facilities across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. read more

Debbie Abbott, a 53-year-old who practically tiptoes around her gas usage, got the shock of her life when Shell handed her an energy bill almost 8,000% higher than her usual. Talk about inflation!

Debbie, who only cranks up her heating when her home turns into an igloo (14 degrees Celsius, to be precise), was used to seeing bills like £10.66 and £15.12. Shell’s subsidiary, Shell Egypt, just struck gold, or should we say gas, in the Mediterranean. They’ve been drilling holes in the ocean floor, and voilà, they hit a jackpot of natural gas at the Mina West-1X well. That’s just the first of three wells they’re planning to poke in the Mina West project.

Down in the offshore Nile Delta, about 250 meters under the sea (no mermaids spotted), they found a hefty stash of natural gas. Preliminary poking around suggests this could be a big deal for Egypt’s energy scene and a nice feather in Shell Egypt’s cap. read more

In a stunning twist of fate that’s sure to leave environmentalists and anti-corruption advocates reeling, Nigeria has decided to just give up on its pesky lawsuits against the ever-so-virtuous Shell Plc over some trivial corruption allegations in a decade-old oil field deal. It’s like watching a thrilling courtroom drama, but the good guys (obviously Shell and friends) win in the end without breaking a sweat.

The Nigerian Ministry of Justice, in a move that’s totally not suspicious at all, has gracefully bowed out of civil proceedings related to an oil block, OPL 245, before Italy’s highest court. A Shell spokesperson, probably struggling to contain their glee, confirmed this delightful turn of events. Shell’s partner, Eni SpA, also chimed in, confirming they received a letter from the government stating the claims would be withdrawn “unconditionally” by Friday. “We are pleased that this claim has been withdrawn,” said the Shell spokesperson, in what must be the understatement of the century. read more
