A 1.6 magnitude induced earthquake near Sappemeer reminds the Netherlands that Groningen’s gas extraction disaster did not end when the tap was turned off. It merely entered its tremor-and-lawyer phase

There are some corporate legacies that refuse to stay buried. In Groningen, they do not merely resurface in inquiry reports, compensation claims and arbitration filings. They arrive as tremors under people’s homes.

According to NL Times, an earthquake with a magnitude of 1.6 struck Sappemeer in Groningen at 7:08 p.m. on Sunday. RTV Noord received dozens of reports from local residents, and the Dutch meteorological institute KNMI registered it as an induced earthquake — meaning, in this case, a quake caused by human activity connected to gas extraction. read more

The ultimate sin stock just can’t catch a break — especially not when it abandoned a gas project, got sued by Russia, and now pretends none of it was their fault.

Oh dear, Shell. Yet another chapter in the never-ending “Oops, Did We Do That?” saga of one of the world’s most polluting, profit-obsessed corporations. This time, it’s Moscow calling — and they’d like $1.6 billion, please.

In its latest annual report, Shell confirmed that a Russian prosecutor has sued not one, but eight Shell group entities — including Shell plc and Shell Energy Europe Limited (SEEL) — over alleged unpaid gas deliveries from 2022. The plaintiff? Good ol’ Gazprom Export, the Kremlin’s favorite fossil-fueled blunt instrument. read more

The name of my Amazon Kindle book – “John Donovan, Shell’s nightmare” is not an ego-driven title dreamt up by me, but the headline of an article by an award-winning newspaper journalist, Christoph Giesen published across the EU in ten languages.

A broadsheet German daily newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung published a major article about me on 20 March 2012 under the headline “Konzernfeind No. 1.”
