POLICE INSPECTOR DEMANDS INFORMATION FROM SHELL?

POLICE INSPECTOR DEMANDS INFORMATION FROM SHELL?

By John Donovan: 31 Dec 2021

I have received emails purportedly sent to me and others by a police inspector from Sama Police Station in Vadodara City, India.

The emails contain serious allegations against Shell.

The emails may be fake or genuine.

The irate police inspector in question, N.H. Brambhatt seems keen to get into contact with Shell. He seems to have reached the conclusion that Shell is frustrating the progress of his enquiries.

Earlier today I sent the following email to Mr Donny Ching, the Legal Director of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (but not for much longer). read more

SHELL ASSETS DIVESTMENT IN THE NIGER DELTA: THE WHOLE TRUTH FROM AN INSIDER’S VIEW

SHELL ASSETS DIVESTMENT IN THE NIGER DELTA: THE WHOLE TRUTH FROM AN INSIDER’S VIEW

By Zik Gbemre

  • I am vindicated by the unbiased account expressed by a former Shell General Manager on why the oil major left Delta state.
  • Until we situate the blame in all honesty and amend our ways, we will remain stagnated as a state and in the south of the Niger Delta at large.

When stakeholders often rationalise where to situate the blame over the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) unforgettable divestment of its key assets in Delta state which drastically shattered the state’s economy, I tell people not to look too far to find the key actors who forced that situation.

People may blame Shell, but Shell wasn’t the problem. Even if Shell genuinely intended to leave Delta, it never meant to leave the way it did. The greedy, thieving PDP hegemony of government over the state gave much recognition to violent youths above the law-abiding from the greed of James Ibori to the insensitivity of his successor cousin forced the Shell exit. read more

Shell seismic survey: NSPCA finds sense of relief and celebrates victory for the voiceless in the sea

STAFF REPORTER: 30 DEC 2021

DURBAN – The National Council of SPCAs said it found a sense of relief and celebrated the interim victory for the voiceless after the Makhanda High Court interdicted Shell’s seismic survey.

On Tuesday, the Makhanda High Court in the Eastern Cape ruled that Shell could not continue with the blasting, which was meant to explore for oil and natural gas off the Wild Coast. read more

Seismic surveys by Shell in whale breeding grounds halted by South African court

Wed, 29 December 2021, 5:51 pm

A court in South Africa has halted oil giant Shell’s exploratory offshore seismic surveys in the latest ruling in a case brought by campaigners arguing the activity causes “irreparable harm” to the marine environment.

The new ruling forms part of a broader legal case contending that Shell did not have the necessary environmental approvals to continue with their surveys.

The decision comes after a different South African high court gave its approval on 3 December for Shell to begin conducting the surveys in waters off South Africa’s eastern coast. read more

Lawyer who defeated Shell predicts ‘avalanche’ of climate cases

Financial Times: Tom Wilson in London: 29 Dec 2021

Seven months after his landmark victory against Royal Dutch Shell, Roger Cox has never been busier.

Little known outside his native Netherlands, Cox is probably the world’s most successful climate litigator. His win against Shell in May, when a judge in The Hague ordered the Anglo-Dutch energy supermajor to cut its carbon emissions by 45 per cent by 2030, rippled around the world.

He is now preparing to respond to Shell’s appeal next year, petitioning the Belgian government to comply with another of his court victories and consulting on half a dozen climate cases in other countries. read more

The Dutch offshore sector is very concerned about the business climate in the Netherlands.

The increasing anti-fossil sentiment is a thorn in the side of the sector.

Earlier this year, oil and gas multinational Shell announced to move its headquarters from The Hague to London . The move may have been prompted by the desire to simplify the share structure, but many see that anti-fossil sentiment also plays an important role in that move. read more

Australia Tells Shell to Keep Prelude FLNG Unit Offline Until It’s Proven Safe for Workers

Mike Schuler: December 28, 2021 Regulators in Australia have ordered Shell to keep its giant Prelude FLNG facility offline until it can demonstrate that its safe for workers.

Under the direction of Australia’s offshore energy regulator NOPSEMA, Shell Australia is to “undertake an investigation and create a plan, schedule and commitment to take all necessary corrective actions and demonstrate that the facility can operate safely in the event of power loss” before production can be restarted.

The direction comes after an electrical fire on December 2 led to a complete loss of power to the facility, resulting unreliable and intermittent power for three days. Media reports say the facility was partially evacuated, leaving only a skeleton crew for essential functions. read more

BBC News:

South Africa court blocks Shell’s oil exploration

28 Dec 2021

A South African court has halted oil giant Shell’s seismic testing for oil and gas along the country’s eastern coastline, pending a final ruling.

The decision has been hailed by environmentalists who fear that the sound blasting will harm marine life.

Shell said it had “paused” operations while it reviewed the judgement.

South Africa’s Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe had condemned the project’s critics, saying they wanted to deprive Africa of energy resources. read more

Court orders Shell to halt Wild Coast seismic blasting

28 December 2021 – 10:10: BY ADRIENNE CARLISLE

Shell will have to call a halt to its seismic survey along the ecologically sensitive Wild Coast after the high court in Makhanda today interdicted it from proceeding.

Judge Gerald Bloem on Tuesday morning interdicted Shell from continuing with the survey which kicked off on December 2.

Richard Spoor Attorneys and the Legal Resources Centre acting on behalf of the Dwesa-Cwebe, Amadiba, and Port Saint Johns communities, as well as environmental organisations, argued last week that the seismic surveying was devastating to the marine environment as well as harmful to communities’ rights and reliance on the sea for sustenance, income and cultural practices. read more

Shell gets OK to proceed with offshore wind project off New England

Shell gets OK to proceed with offshore wind project off New England

A joint offshore wind venture spearheaded by Royal Dutch Shell and Ocean Winds North America has gained approval to build more offshore wind turbines off the New England coast that is expected to generate 400 megawatts.

The new turbines, part of the Mayflower project, will provide energy to Massachusetts’ three largest utilities. The energy produced by the newly approved turbines can generate enough electricity to power more than a half-million homes and businesses each day, Shell officials said in a statement.

Shell and OW have combined on two other offshore wind projects, approved in 2019, expected to produce 804 megawatts of power. read more

Scientists protest at museum’s Shell link

Elisabeth Perlman: Monday December 27 2021, 12.01am, The Times Two researchers have shunned the Science Museum over its links to the fossil fuel industry and will donate their work to a rival institution instead.

Steve and Deonie Allen, who are pioneers of charting and detecting microplastics in the environment, hope to hand over material from their expeditions to the Natural History Museum.

After the Allens found out about a gagging clause in the Science Museum’s agreement with Shell to sponsor a climate change exhibition, preventing it from “damaging the goodwill or reputation” of the oil giant, they decided to withdraw their involvement.

The couple had been due to give their artefacts to the Science Museum last month. The items included a paraglider they were flying when they first detected microplastics in the air and… read more

Prelude FLNG Remains Shut In Until Shell Makes It Safe For Work

by Bojan Lepic: Rigzone Staff: Monday, December 27, 2021

Supermajor Shell has been told to keep its massive Prelude FLNG facility shut until it can convince Australian oil and gas safety regulator NOPSEMA that it can keep the facility properly powered and that the safety systems were operational.

The order is a reaction to a shutdown of production from the Prelude FLNG facility earlier this month it lost power, and the crew making several failed attempts to re-establish power aboard. read more

Shell (RDS.A) Upholds Order to Stall Work at Prelude FLNG Plant

CONTRIBUTOR

Royal Dutch Shell plc (RDS.A) received an order from NOPSEMA, the Australian oil and gas industry’s safety regulator, to keep the massive Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility (offshore Western Australia) closed. The directive will remain enforced until RDS.A can prove to the regulator that the facility is adequately powered and its safety measures are in working order.

The order came after manufacturing at the floating plant was halted earlier this month due to a power outage and the repeated attempts to re-establish stable electricity were unsuccessful. The inability to restore adequate power seemed unending, thus jeopardizing the health and safety of the facility’s staff. Due to this shutdown, FLNG LNG capacity will most certainly be unavailable for several months. read more
