New York Times: Darfur: Death by Dollars

By Nick Kristof

So is your Fidelity account underwriting genocide in Sudan? Is your pension fund helping finance the janjaweed militias that throw babies into bonfires in Darfur and Chad?

The answer to both questions is complicated but may be yes, and that’s one reason a divestment campaign is gaining strength around America and abroad. Six states (including California) have already begun divesting from companies active in Sudan, and legislation is pending in 23 more states, including New York.

More than 30 universities, beginning with Harvard in 2005, have sold certain Sudan-related investments. Five cities have divested, and New York is considering doing so. A bill before Congress would bar certain companies active in Sudan from receiving federal contracts. read more

Financial Times: Bolivia: nationalise this

Monday 12 February 2007

It seems that whenever things start going badly for Evo Morales, he nationalises something. So it was again last Friday when the Bolivian president announced the state was taking back control of Vinto, a tin smelter owned by Swiss company Glencore.

It was an extravagant way of covering up what had been a terrible week, marked by an extraordinary U-turn on a plan to raise mining taxes. After two days of protests in La Paz, Mr Morales agreed to freeze taxes paid by mining co-operatives. Those protests followed a weekend in which Mr Morales had used troops against demonstrators in southern Bolivia demanding a more radical nationalisation of the gas sector. read more

The Moscow Times: TNK-BP Gets Deadline to Fix Kovykta Fields

Monday, February 12, 2007. Issue 3594. Page 7.

The Associated Press

The subsoil agency has given TNK-BP three months to fix licensing violations at its giant Kovykta natural gas development or risk losing the license to develop the field, environmental regulator Oleg Mitvol said Friday.

Observers say intense regulatory pressure on Shell’s Sakhalin-2 project led to the company selling a controlling stake to gas monopoly Gazprom, and suggest Kovykta could be next as the Kremlin seeks to expand its control over key energy projects.

Officials have threatened to revoke the license due to underproduction at the field. The joint venture, TNK-BP, has maintained that the local area needs only a fraction of the 9 billion cubic meters of gas it was obliged to produce last year under the original development license, which was drawn up in the 1990s. read more

Do you have grounds to sue Shell? Have you, your firm or family been cheated or injured by Shell?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then you may find this article by John Donovan to be of interest…

The first difficulty faced by potential litigants considering suing Shell, is finding a law firm with the required resources which does not have a conflict of interest and is willing to confront an opponent quite literally prepared to stop at nothing.

In this connection we may be able to assist by providing introductions at law firms with a track record of winning cases against Shell, who may in some cases, be willing to work on a contingency fee basis. read more

Gulf Times: Qatar to meet chunk of global gas demand

Published: Sunday, 11 February, 2007, 10:02 AM Doha Time
By Pratap John

EVEN as the global demand for liquefied natural gas is estimated to touch about 420mn tons by 2015, Qatar is boosting its LNG production to meet a large chunk of the need by investing about $50bn in new facilities under Qatargas and RasGas.

“Qatargas itself is now establishing four trains and these will be brought online by 2010. At that stage, Qatargas, the state’s first LNG producer, will clock an annual production capacity of 42mn tonnes and help Qatar’s production to be ramped up to 77mn tons,” Qatargas chairman and CEO Faisal M al-Suwaidi said in an interview with Gulf Times yesterday. read more

Business Today (India); Gas Gets Going

EXTRACT: …multinationals like BG and Shell have sought a monopoly regime in the marketing segment for a few initial years to ensure viability of their businesses.

Balaji Chandramouli, Business Today (India)
Published: Feb 11, 2007

Early this month, the government decided to rush through a gas pipeline policy, ahead of the soon-to-be-born regulator. Rushed, for the regulator is well empowered to do the same. But the urgency is understandable-domestic gas finds in the last five years, estimated at 20 trillion cubic feet, need to reach the market through pipelines that will criss-cross the country. Says petroleum secretary M.S. Srinivasan: “Exploration companies need to recover their investments by selling gas to consumers.” Consumers, too, are hungry for gas, with supply at a mere half of the prevailing demand. Pipelines, therefore, are a critical infrastructure to meet the energy demand. read more
