RIA Novosti: Gazprom, Sakhalin Energy working to repair eco-damage on Sakhalin-II

MOSCOW, February 21 (RIA Novosti) — Gazprom [RTS: GAZP] and Sakhalin Energy, operator of the Sakhalin II oil and gas project off Russia’s Pacific Coast, are working to remedy environmental damage caused by the project, a Gazprom official said Wednesday.

The ambitious project, formerly led by Shell, was subjected to months of intense pressure last year from Russian authorities, who accused it of causing serious environmental damage to Sakhalin Island, including deforestation, toxic waste dumping and soil erosion. read more

Bangalore, Feb 21: Shell, a chemicals major will have its third technology hub in Bangalore, focusing on cutting edge technology in energy by 2010, a top official said.

“We will have a research and development campus spread over 40 acres of land, hopefully by 2010. This will be Shell’s third technology centre besides the ones in the Netherlands and Houston,” Bob Firth, president Shell Technology India, said.

“Our application for land is already before the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB)”, he told reporters here today. read more

Reuters: Shell gets US approval for offshore Arctic drilling

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. regulators have approved Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s plan to drill up to four exploration wells in Arctic waters off the northern coast of Alaska this summer.

The Minerals Management Service, which manages federal offshore waters, approved the plans February 15 following an environmental impact study conducted by the MMS.

The exploration wells will test the multimillion-dollar bet Shell made on the area in 2005, when it snapped up the bulk of the offshore drilling rights offered by the MMS in its Beaufort Sea lease sale. read more

The National Business Review: ComCom clears BOC’s Shell acquisition

Gas supplier BOC Limited has been given the green light by the Commerce Commission to acquire Shell New Zealand’s LPG holdings – including its LPG business, and its shareholding in Liquigas Limited.

BOC is a wholly owned subsidiary of BOC New Zealand Holdings Limited.

BOC’s New Zealand business centres on delivering LPG cylinders and retailing LPG through its business division, Gas ‘n’ Gear, which operates a cylinder fill service.  

The acquisition does not include Shell’s LPG production and supply business or the service station arm of Shell’s current LPG activities. read more

REGNUM: Russian energy ministry: Sakhalin natural liquefied gas will open way to Russia for Asian markets

Delivery of natural liquefied gas that will be produced in Sakhalin within frameworks of the Sakhalin 2 project are fully oriented towards exports and will help Russia strengthening its positions substantially in Asian-Pacific fuel markets, a source at the Russian Industry and Energy Ministry told a REGNUM correspondent commenting on preparatory works on produce of liquefied gas in Sakhalin.

The plant that will be producing liquefied gas has not been launched officially yet, but its construction is accomplished by more than 90%. Total amount of Sakhalin liquefied gas, supplies of which are to start in 2008, is contracted up to date. read more

NEW DELHI: Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL), India’s third biggest state-run refiner, on Wednesday said it will sell 49 per cent stake in Bharat Shell Ltd to partner Shell Overseas Investment BV, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

“The Board of Directors of the company at its meeting on Wednesday has approved the proposal with regard to sale of 49 per cent of shareholdings held by BPCL in Bharat Shell to Shell Overseas BV,” BPCL said.

Shell in a statement said BPCL and Shell Overseas Investments BV have reached an agreement, subject to regulatory and government approvals for transfer of stake in
Bharat Shell. read more

Bloomberg: Nigerian Militant Group Threatening to Wage `Full-Scale War’

Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) — The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, is preparing to widen its attack against the Nigerian government and oil companies, the group’s spokesman said.

“We understand we can never achieve a just peace without full-scale war against the Nigerian government and oil companies,” MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo said in an e-mail statement. “We are in preparations for this eventuality and do not contemplate any dialogue based on the Nigerian government’s idea of justice.” read more

SHELL Global Solutions, a unit of oil giant Royal Dutch Shell Group, plans to boost its headcount in Malaysia to 500 by 2008 from 370 now, as it aims to nurture local and regional talents to lead its business teams in future.

Its regional operations manager for Asia Pacific (projects) Winfried Arens said over the long term, the company plans to implement business projects, with a majority of local and regional staff taking the lead.

“We have to find the right people with the right potential. Only then can they (local and regional staff) take on the next level of responsibility in the next three to five years,” he told Business Times in an interview. read more

Financial Times: Exxon cancels gas-to-liquids project in Qatar

ExxonMobil has scrapped plans for a multi-billion-dollar gas-to-liquids (GTL) project in Qatar that would have converted natural gas into fuel, lubricant and chemical feedstocks.

The cancellation is the biggest setback yet for GTL technology, which its backers hope will be an important source of road fuel and petrochemical products in the next decade. Exxon will instead join in a project developing gas for the domestic market in Qatar. read more

Rocky Mountain News: Shell wants camp for 600

Energy behemoth Shell wants to build a temporary living quarters for 600 workers near its drilling site in Rio Blanco County as it dramatically ramps up oil shale operations on the Western Slope.

The company discussed its plans for the “man camp” at a community meeting on Tuesday in Meeker, attended by scores of residents. Shell will hold similar meetings in Rangely, Grand Junction and Rifle over the next couple of days.

The proposed camp, which needs county approval, would be next to the company’s existing temporary living quarters at its private Mahogany oil shale test site near Meeker, which currently has about 150 workers. read more

SYDNEY (XFN-ASIA) – Woodside Petroleum Ltd said its year to December 2006 net profit rose 29 pct year-on-year to a record 1.42 bln aud as it benefited from higher oil and gas prices and increased production.

Woodside, 34 pct-owned by the Royal Dutch Shell (nyse: RDSA – news – people ) Group, said net profit before one-off items rose 34.5 pct to 1.39 bln aud, beating analysts consensus estimate for 1.36 bln aud.

In afternoon trade, Woodside shares were up 0.59 aud or 1.59 pct at 37.76. read more
