Shell Wants Greens to Butt Out of Arctic

Courthouse News Service

By PURNA NEMANI

ANCHORAGE (CN) – Shell oil sued 13 leading environmental groups, seeking a Federal Court order declaring it legally authorized to proceed with Arctic Ocean drilling this summer, despite the groups’ complaints.

An Anchorage federal judge in March granted Shell a protective order preventing Greenpeace from interfering in Shell’s plans to explore offshore oil and gas leases in the Arctic.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason granted Shell’s request two days after Greenpeace members boarded its drilling vessel, the Noble Discoverer, to protest and try to prevent it from drilling in the Arctic. read more

Shell Nigeria Bomu-Bonny Pipeline Leaking – Community

May 7, 2012

LONDON (Dow Jones)–A leak on Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s (RDSB.LN) Bomu-Bonny oil pipeline in Nigeria has been spilling around 150 liters of crude oil a minute since Monday morning, a local community member said.

“Another serious oil spill occurred four hours ago on the pipeline, approximately 200 meters south of the Bomu manifold. About 150 liters of oil is oozing out every minute,” said the community member Monday.

The manifold is located on the Bomu-Bonny Trans-Niger pipeline, which normally carries around 120,000 barrels a day. It is unclear if oil transit has been disrupted by attempts to stop the leak. read more

Shell sharpens up its in-house army of 600 litigators

Lawyers are not business people, however large a lawyer’s experience may be, in the conduct of business he is absolutely useless. A lawyer placed at the head of a concern would soon bring the business to rack and ruin.

By John Donovan

The Lawyer reports today that “Royal Dutch Shell has launched a new global disputes group to handle all of its litigation and arbitration, appointing Fulbright & Jaworski partner Richard Hill as the group’s associate general counsel.”

Shell kicks off global litigation group with Fulbright hire

It says that with his appointment, Shell will have 108 lawyers worldwide as part of a 600 strong in-house legal department.

Enough to cover multiple claims for IP theft, wrongful dismissal, human rights abuse, avoidable deaths of Shell employees, pollution claims, corruption allegations, and other unsavory litigation arising from Shell’s failure to abide with its own core business principles. read more
