Department of Agriculture seals several Pumps at three Shell service stations
due to water found in storage tanks

ATLANTA, GA (April 11, 2007) – Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin confirms today that Shell service stations, in three different parts of the state have had gasoline pumps seals because they contained water mixed with the gasoline.

At the Shell station at 157 Highway 61 in Villa Rica, mid-grade pumps were sealed due to water in the storage tank.

In Forsyth, just north of Macon, the Shell station at 295 Gee Parkway had its regular unleaded gasoline pumps shut-down because inspectors found water in its storage tank.

East of Atlanta in Stone Mountain, the Shell station at 1836 Mountain Industrial Boulevard had its premium pumps sealed after an agriculture worker found water in the pump after a routine inspection.

“This is a bit unusual, “says Irvin. “But we think the problem will be corrected in short-order. We are getting good cooperation from Shell Oil and the service stations involved…”

This week, Shell began blending 10 percent ethanol into all of its grades of gasoline. Frequently, gasoline storage tanks may have a small amount of water found at the very bottom of its storage tank. With Ethanol, the water may suspend throughout the product showing an unacceptable high level of water contamination.

Agriculture officials say they are working closely with Shell engineers in determining the cause of the contamination in addition to eliminating the problems.
