Greenpeace’s Shard stunt was bold, but will it help its cause?

Greenpeace has campaigned against Shell’s Arctic plans, with exploits including the boarding of a Shell icebreaker in the Baltic, the shutting down of 74 Shell petrol stations and last year’s elaborate internet hoax, featuring a spoof Shell webpage , and, within that, a display of satirical slogans supporting Arctic exploitation: “We’d drill a crippled orphan’s spine if there was some oil in it.”

The group’s motives are clearly sound, but such vivid protests are no guarantee of winning the war of words

The Observer,

In its simplicity and boldness, the scaling of the Shard must be the most appealing show ever staged by Greenpeace in all of that organisation’s long history of grabbing public attention. No biohazard suits, no showing off, no David and Goliath stand-offs requiring David to shout through a megaphone – just six climbers, a sunny day and a great crowd of awed Londoners – and beyond that, countless followers online, doing no work. This must have been the effect David Blaine had hoped for in 2003, when he hung a plexiglass box nearby, and starved for 44 days. Instead, Londoners threw buns at him. read more

BP Plc, Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) and Statoil ASA (STL) are under scrutiny by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as the agency probes whether they manipulated oil benchmarks published by Platts, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The FTC’s early-stage investigation into oil prices mirrors a review by the European Union, which raided the offices of the three companies and Platts in May, two people familiar with the probe said last month. Platts, the energy news and data provider owned by McGraw Hill Financial Inc. (MHFI), publishes the Dated Brent benchmark that contributes to setting the price of more than half the world’s oil. read more

Screen Shot 2013-02-03 at 10.25.25

As Western Europe’s tallest building, the Shard skyscraper in London already gets its fair share of attention. But commuters travelling to work today glimpsed an even more amazing sight: six women scaling the 310m-high landmark in protest against Shell’s drilling in the Arctic.

Taking part in a hugely ambitious Greenpeace stunt that took months to plan, the climbers quickly drew a large crowd of neck-craning, eye-shielding spectators to the foot of the London Bridge building. read more

The sight of six tiny figures inching up the smooth glass exterior of Europe’s tallest building was almost too much for some of the onlookers gathered below.

“Rather them than me,” said Nigel Steward, 55, who was on a day trip from home in Surrey with his wife and her sister. “We were on the viewing platform earlier and could see them coming up. It was quite a sight.”

Steward was one of hundreds of people craning their necks at the base of the Shard in central London as a team of six environmental campaigners scaled the 310-metre glass tower above London Bridge to draw attention to Shell’s oil and gas drilling plans in the Arctic. read more

Shell shock as new boss is appointed

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL sprang another surprise on the City yesterday by naming its head of refining Ben van Beurden as its new chief executive to succeed Peter Voser next January.

Dutchman Van Beurden, 55, who has been with the Anglo-Dutch oil giant for 30 years but only appointed to the board in January as boss of its downstream operations, had not been touted as a likely contender to replace Voser, whose decision to stand down after less than five years in the top job had stunned investors.

Analysts had focused on chief financial officer Simon Henry and other divisional heads including Marvin Odum and Andy Brown as potential successors, although Shell also reviewed outside candidates. read more

YouTube: Shell Accused of Corrupting Irish Police Force

Published on Jul 9, 2013

OSSL claim that their company was a supplier to Shell in respect of the Corrib Gas Project. They allege that acting on Shell’s instructions, OSSL has distributed bribes on Shell’s behalf to parties connected with the project, including the Irish police force (the Garda) who have been the subject of serious accusations of wrong doing by environmental activists protesting against the project. The main accusation being that the Garda has acted as an offshoot of Shell security. For more info please visit: http://royaldutchshellplc.com/2013/03… read more

Shell: New Boss required but limited choices

Screen Shot 2012-09-19 at 09.13.48As for Commander Odum, he of the theatre of Operations, only a marine incident etc school he was doomed not by the grounding of the good ship Kulluk, but in the lie telling that followed.  It was not I fear just poor Lawrence of Alaska who suffered from this misadventure.

COMMENT RECEIVED FROM BILL CAMPBELL, RETIRED HSE GROUP AUDITOR, SHELL INTERNATIONAL:

Dear John

It was not a surprise to me that Simon Henry was not in the running, the Head Shed watchers of this website would have realised that he carried heavy baggage from the reserves affair, also Shell does not appreciate the washing of its dirty linen in public, the stories for example from the lips of Simon that Pastor Phil (did he have an out of spacesuit experience when he passed through the heavenly layer on his way back to ground at Maastricht and was thus converted) was carrying a huge chip on his shoulder because he was not an Oxbridge man, who knows.  Henry, as the Bedouin are fond of saying say, was outside the tent pissing in, an unforgivable sin. read more

Ben van Beurden is an insider who has made late rise to the top

By John Aglionby

He worked as private assistant to the chairman, Phil Watts, from 2002-2004, including during the 2004 accounting scandal, when it emerged Shell had overstated its oil reserves. This led to a major purge of senior management but Mr van Beurden continued to rise.
