What will be next for Royal Dutch Shell? Last Friday, the company issued a profit warning, announcing that fourth-quarter net income was going to be $2.9 billion US, down from $5.6 billion in the same period a year earlier.

It was the first such warning in a decade.

The company blamed a number of factors, including challenges on the refining side of its business, rising exploration costs and other challenges related to operating in countries such as Nigeria, where security continues to be a problem. read more

President of Royal Dutch Shell says BC LNG could be ‘pilot’ for federal streamlining

CALGARY – There is a “narrow window” of opportunity for Canada to take advantage of the lucrative global market for liquefied natural gas, the president of Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Tuesday.

Shell and three Asian partners plan to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Kitimat, B.C. that would connect Canada’s vast supplies with energy-hungry markets on the other side of the Pacific.

The Anglo-Dutch energy giant announced earlier this month it will have a 40 per cent stake in the project, called LNG Canada. PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corp. and Korea Gas Corp. will each hold a 20 per cent interest. No pricetag was disclosed. read more

Shell’s bid for two new pipelines rejected

In a rare move, the province’s energy regulator has rejected Shell Canada’s application for two new pipelines at the company’s Waterton field site in southwestern Alberta.

But the Energy Resources Conservation Board ruled late Wednesday that Shell Canada will be allowed to drill a new sour gas well in the area and add a fuel-gas compressor.

The board added that given the way that the company has operated its existing infrastructure in the area 20 kilometres west of Pincher Creek, it has not demonstrated that it has followed its own procedures. read more
