Exclusive-Shell in talks with Indian consortium to sell Russian LNG plant stake -sources

LONDON (Reuters) -Shell is in talks with a consortium of Indian energy companies to sell its stake in a major liquefied natural gas plant in Russia, three sources told Reuters, highlighting India’s willingness to step into the space left by Western companies following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer has already stepped up purchases of Russian supplies since the conflict began in February, taking advantage of big discounts at a time when global oil prices have surged.

The sources said Shell has recently entered into talks with a group of Indian companies, including ONGC Videsh and Gail, over its 27.5% stake in the Sakhalin-2 LNG plant on Russia’s eastern flank.

Shell declined to comment. ONGC, Gail and other state-run Indian companies did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The talks follow the British company’s plans to exit all its Russian operations, amid an exodus of Western companies from the country in response to sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. India has not explicitly condemned Moscow’s actions there.

India has snapped up cheap Russian oil, taking its share of Russian oil exports to around 10% from zero since the start of this year, according to the International Energy Agency. read more

Shell: ‘We understand worry for millions – but windfall tax creates uncertainty’

Shell: ‘We understand worry for millions – but windfall tax creates uncertainty’

 and : FRIDAY 27 MAY 2022

Shell has slammed the government’s windfall tax, saying while it “understands the worry for million” about the cost of living it will creates “uncertainty” about investment.

This follows Chancellor Rishi Sunak announcing a so-called Energy Profits Levy, a 25 per cent surcharge on North Sea oil and gas sector profits, which could last for up to three years.

The Treasury expects the tax will raise around £5bn over the next 12 months – which will help fund a £15bn package to save the country’s most vulnerable households £1,200 this year.

After BP said the tax may force it to reconsider its UK investment plans, Shell is the latest energy giant to come out against the levy.

A spokesperson told City A.M. : “We understand the worry for millions of people about how high energy costs are challenging their household budgets – and the need for support to help make ends meet.” read more

I worked at Shell for 33 years – the government is wrong on North Sea oil

By Grahame Buss: 27 May 2022

I was a principal scientist for the oil company Shell, for which I worked for 33 years. I have a degree in aeronautical engineering and a PhD in fluid mechanics.

I recently read a letter from the business and energy secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, in which he tries to justify government plans to encourage investment in new North Sea oil and gas. He says it would “protect Britain’s energy security” and smooth the “transition to cheap, clean, home-grown energy”, as well as cutting energy bills.

But expanding North Sea oil will do none of those things, for several reasons.

We don’t own the oil and gas, which we give away to energy companies together with substantial subsidies. They sell the oil and gas to the highest bidder on international markets, keep all the revenue, and are currently making eye-watering profits on which they pay almost no tax. Almost 80 per cent of UK production of crude oil is exported and plays no part in our domestic energy security.

We don’t own the companies that exploit this oil and gas. According to one study, more than a third of the licence blocks in the North Sea now have a private or state-backed controlling interest, with fossil fuel firms from China, Russia and the Middle East playing an increasingly dominant role. As well as being unaccountable to UK shareholders, these businesses have no strategic interest in UK energy security or in keeping bills low for UK households. read more

Shell sells Russian retail business to Lukoil

May 12 (Reuters) – Russia’s second-largest oil producer Lukoil (LKOH.MM) will buy Shell’s (SHEL.L) Russian retail and lubricants businesses, the companies said on Thursday, as the British oil major moves ahead with its exit from the country following its Ukraine invasion.

The deal includes 411 retail stations, mainly located in the Central and Northwestern regions of Russia, and the Torzhok lubricants blending plant, Shell said in a statement.

“The acquisition of Shell’s high-quality businesses in Russia fits well into Lukoil’s strategy to develop its priority sales channels, including retail, as well as the lubricants business,” said Maxim Donde, a vice-president with Lukoil.

Neither Shell, nor Lukoil would not comment on the value of the deal, which still requires the approval of Russia’s anti-monopoly authorities. read more

“Under this deal, more than 350 people currently employed by Shell Neft will transfer to the new owner of this business,” Shell said. read more

Shell CEO points out loopholes in Russian oil sanctions after announcing record profits

BY CHLOE TAYLOR: May 5, 2022 4:16 PM GMT+1

Planned embargoes on Russian oil may be thwarted due to the way the global crude supply chain works, Shell’s CEO explained on Thursday.

Speaking after Shell reported record quarterly profits, Ben van Beurden, the oil giant boss, told reporters that the framework of the world’s crude network left loopholes open in Western government bans on Russian oil.

This is because imported fuels like gasoline, which might have been made from Russian oil but refined outside of Russia, cannot always be traced back to their natural source. read more

Fossil fuel companies like Shell and BP are raking in massive profits, and this could be just the beginning

FORTUNE

Fossil fuel companies like Shell and BP are raking in massive profits, and this could be just the beginning

BY TRISTAN BOVE: May 5, 2022 8:33 PM GMT+1 Oil prices have been soaring this year, as Western sanctions hit the Russian economy hard, disrupting the global oil supply from one of the world’s largest producers. But while high gasoline prices at the pump make life difficult for consumers, fossil fuel companies are making a killing.Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine over two months ago, Brent crude, an international benchmark for oil pricing, has surged past $100 a barrel, the highest oil has sold for since 2012.

According to the latest round of quarterly reports from the world’s largest oil and gas companies, the fossil fuel industry has been benefiting massively from this surge. Demand for energy this year has soared as economies rebound from historically low demand during the pandemic, and coupled with a constrained supply from Russia, one of the world’s largest fuel exporters, the rest of 2022 could be just as profitable for fossil fuel companies. read more

Shell profits soar to $9.1bn amid calls for windfall tax

Shell profits soar to $9.1bn amid calls for windfall tax

Record quarter piles pressure on government to issue one-off levy to curb rising energy bills

Alex Lawson: Thu 5 May 2022 02.55 EDT

Shell has reported a record quarterly profit of $9.1bn (£7.3bn) for the first three months of the year, piling more pressure on the government to implement a windfall tax to fund measures to tackle soaring household energy bills.

The first-quarter profit was boosted by a sharp rise in oil and gas prices, and compared with $6.3bn of profits in the final three months of 2021 and $3.2bn during the first quarter of last year. It was above analysts’ expectations of first-quarter adjusted earnings of $8.7bn.

Campaigners have called for a one-off levy on companies benefiting from soaring oil and gas prices to fund government initiatives to reduce the burden of rising bills.

Shell’s update comes after BP reported its highest quarterly profit in more than a decade on Tuesday. Its profits more than doubled to $6.2bn, and sparked a clamour for a windfall tax.

The government has resisted calls for such a levy. Boris Johnson has said it would discourage oil and gas producers from making investments into domestic energy.

But BP’s chief executive, Bernard Looney, has admitted none of the £18bn UK investments the company is planning would be dropped if a windfall tax were imposed. read more

Shell profits jump 43% to £7.2 billion amid calls for windfall tax

By Oscar Williams-Grut City Editor @OscarWGrut: 5 May 2022

Oil giant Shell has announced a huge jump in profits amid growing calls for a windfall tax on oil and gas giants.

Royal Dutch Shell reported underlying profits of $9.1 billion (£7.2 billion) in the first quarter, up 43% on the final three months of 2021 thanks to soaring oil and gas prices.

The huge profits are likely to reignite calls for a windfall tax on energy giants. A one-off tax on BP and Shell alone could raise £9 billion for the Treasury, the Liberal Democrats estimate. read more

Ukraine urges Johnson to ensure ‘not a drop’ of Russian oil reaches the UK

Shell, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, has pledged to withdraw from Russian oil products, but…

Ukraine’s government has urged the UK to ensure “not a single drop of Russian oil enters the country”, as it pushed for a “total and immediate” boycott on Russian fossil fuels.

Oleg Ustenko, economic adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said it was “no time for half measures”. It comes amid concerns Britain may adopt a definition of Russian oil that allows some Kremlin supplies into the country, even under the impending embargo. read more
