News reports from long ago are emerging on the Internet as newspapers create digital searchable online archives. This is a disastrous development for  companies such as Royal Dutch Shell that have been around for a long time and have a toxic history to hide.

An article published on 3 April 1933 by the Border Cities Star, a Canadian daily newspaper, reported allegations made in Pravda, the official political publication of the Soviet Communist Party in Russia. They accused Sir Henri Deterding, the tyrannical head of Royal Dutch Shell, of funding Hitler and described the Nazis as “obedient agents of their benefactors,” claiming: Deterding orders-Hitler acts.”

In 2007, Shell’s paid historians presented what has turned out to be a false picture of the relationship between Deterding and Hitler, claiming that all attempts by Deterding to meet with Hitler were fended off.

We now know from previously buried U.S. and Canadian news archive reports from the 1930’s that this was totally wrong.

Deterding, who had become an ardent Nazi along with a number of other Shell directors, was an honoured guest at Hitlers mountain top retreat, where he spent four days plotting with his close friend Adolf Hitler. Both had ambitions in regard to Russian oil fields. Both hated the communists. The New York Times had reported just a few months earlier that Deterding wanted to destroy communism in Russia.

The archived information confirms a special relationship between the Royal Dutch Shell group and the Nazis, with Shell funds pumped into Nazi Germany in the years leading up to World War 2.

Although it is questionable which dictator – Hitler or Deterding, was giving the orders at the time, the Russian report was basically accurate.

Perhaps the Russians were familiar with the adage: He who pays the Piper Calls the Tune?
